Please help with Visa - From UK

We are off travelling in March 2010 and it will be October/November by the time we hit India.

As far as we have read we cant see how we will get our visas. As they are only valid from the date of issue instead of the date you request and only 180day visas are available so we couldnt do it before we left the UK.

Can anyone recommend what we could do about this?

Thanks for your help,
Chris

Where will you be before you head to India? You can get your visa in other countries. There are quite a few threads which can help you if you search on the site. In the forum go to india for beginners and then there is a section "passport and visa questions". You should find answers in there

You have two choices: If money is no object, you could apply for a one year tourist visa, with a covering letter explaining why. They do issue one year tourist visas, I have one myself, but it's a gambol, you do run the risk of only being given a six month one.

Alternatively you can apply for one in a neigbouring country during your travels. As it would be your first Indian visa, you stand a good chance of getting six months.

If you let us know what countries you'll be visiting before India, someone here should be able to let you know the process of getting an Indian visa in that country.

Thanks all, we will be in Thailand before India, and a month before that Cambodia.

HELLO Haylo & all India Lovers. please excuse me as this is my first post & i am a little nervous & the remote possibility of a one year visa has made me a little excited too.
me, my wife & our two boys hope to land in India in October & we would like to stay as long as possible. My understanding was that only a 6 month visa was possible, although i did hear many many moons ago, that it was still possible to get a one year visa, BUT only if you apply to a particular consulate,is this still true?
& if so what consulate did you apply to? MANY THANKS! ps. would we sill have to leave India after 180 days?

jim1888 - yes, even if you get a one year visa, you will still not be able to stay in India for more than 180 days on a given visit.

The advantage of having the one year visa is that after leaving India, you can re-enter right away without having to apply for a new visa.

Jim... welcome to the site, but you could find your answer in five minutes of browsing --- or even on the Indian High Commission and VFS sites!

Maximum stay on any tourist visa is 180 days, regardless of the length of the visa.
