Passport needed for hotels in SL?
Do hotels in Sri Lanka tend to require that you have your passport with you when you get a room? I am going to SL to get a new India visa, and I'm assuming I'll have to leave my passport at the embassy. Will it be enough if I write down the details from my passport?

you need legitimation when checking in. Do you have a driving licence for instance for legitimation?

You can usually get the visa in one day at SL embassy Colombo. Since 90% of the foreign people in Colombo are there to get a visa hotels are fairly used to it; and at any rate SL is never as finicky about this as India. Take a xerox copy of yr PP and SL visa pages in case.
