Question Overland Ladakh to Kathmandu

Hi! Somebody help me out... is there a viable pass, how to get there, price, and how long will it take? I don't want to go all the way back to Delhi!

Thanx in advance for assistance!

R.

Why not? How much time do you have? What month are you planning on doing this overland trip? What means of transport are you thinking of?

Smile Camels have the prettiest eyes...

I'd rather just go straight across. I'll be up in Leh in July and need to make it to KTM by August 1st. So time is not the issue, but vistas and inconvenience of going back to the heat and low altitude are. Can I go thru Pithoragarh, or do I need to go all the way down to Mahendranagar, or do you know another way?

Thanx,

R.

The India-Nepal border is nowhere near Ladakh. Ladakh borders on Western China and it's a very militarily sensitive area. The border with Nepal is actually much closer to Delhi than to Ladakh, so why not return there or at least head back in that direction, to Gorakhpur, and then take a bus to cross into Nepal at the Sunauli/Bhairawa crossing point. Check this page re: the border crossing: http://www.hindustanlink.com/Destination/landentry.htm

Quite honestly, I think it would be easier to fly back to Delhi (takes about an hour/hour and a half from Leh) and then fly from Dehli to Kathmandu (which is also a short flight).

Yes, camels have beautiful eyes!!

I'll have to let someone take over on this. To me it hardly seems possible as I'm sure there are no direct roads and it's very, very far from Leh to Kathmandu.

I've done both overland, Delhi to Srinigar to Leh and Delhi to Kathmandu but that's no help. I know people who have gone from Lhasa, Tibet to Kathmandu overland but that's also not helpful.

Sorry!

Question OK, 2nd question...

Any direct flights from Leh to KTM? As you can tell, I REALLY don't want to go back down to Delhi! Even tho my aunty lives there and I've gotta few friends there, don't want to descend!

None. As far as I know all flights from Leh only go to either Delhi to Chandigarh; certainly no international flights from Leh.

Unhappy Ohh Ho!!!

So sad... I guess I'll be flying then... But check it out- paragliding over the Himalayas from Pokhara! Anybody done that?

Looking forward to getting a close-up view of the himalayan vultures that ride the same air currents!

You might be able to fly from Chandigarh to KTM. Worth checking. Either way, flying from Leh to Delhi or Leh to Chandigarh, you get to fly over the Western Himalaya which is pretty cool. Maybe not as cool as paragliding in Pokhara - which I haven't done!
