Old and New Bhutan (article & photos)

Time is rarely of the essence in Bhutan, the gloriously untouched Buddhist monarchy locked in between India and Tibet. At the start of a 10-day trek through the country’s mildewing forests and sun-dazzled mountain passes , our group was ready to go, but our retinue of 21 packhorses and four horsemen were , we were told, still wading from a remote village through a roadless quagmire to meet us . To while away the time, we decided to explore the Cheri Goemba monastery farther up the hillside.

As we approached the creaking 17th-century structure, we spotted a Bhutanese man dressed in black robes, brandishing a camera lens that would make a paparazzo blush. We were all surprised to see a local wielding a state-of-the-art camera in such an old-world setting . But none of us was prepared for the reaction of our 20-year-old guide.

Am going to Bhutan end of this month. Short trip. Phunshiling, Paro, Thimphu, Punahka, Wangdeu & back. Any pointers would be helpful.
