My girlfriend and I are going to take a trip to Nepal in Feb. After this trip I was hoping to wander are way over to India then Bangladesh, through Burma, Loas and finally Thailand. I now know I can't do Burma by land.
So now I have to figure out a way to get to Loas I would rather not fly and am traveling on a budget. Maybe I should be starting in India. I am hoping to make this trip in a continuos forward motion without backtracking. It will just be me and my girlfriend. Local transport is fine what ever gets us there. Does anyone have any good ideas? What problems will I have crossing borders? India-Bangladesh seams fine and so does India-Nepal. What about Nepal-Tibet/China and then over to Loas will I have any problems in these places? Thanks for any help!Ken |

As far as i know, its still not possible. There are no land borders open to china, and there are only very restricted ones opne to myanmar, none of which will help you. Im pretty sure you have to fly in basically, but you should ask shimla (one of the forum leaders) - he lives there.
I looked into doing a very similar thing recently, and it all looks too hard. You could fly from bangledesh to kunming (china), then laos, thailand.

The only route I think is open if you dont want to fly is:
India - Nepal - Tibet/China - Laos. You are unlikely to have any problem if you have the time to do the trip. Personally I would fly from Calcutta or Dhaka to Bangkok. |

May also think :
Nepal-India (By Road) India-Bangladesh (By Road) Bangladesh-Myanmar (By air) Myanmar-China (By air) |

Thanks for the Info everyone. Now I am kinda thinking about starting in nepal then over to india via NW nepal then make a big loop around india and into bangladesh then out the top of bangladesh quik pass through india, nepal to tibet/china border. Now here is where I see problems coming up. I want to go to through china to laos. What about all these mandatory group tours I here about in china/tibet? Is it possable to just get a visa at the boarder of tibet and wonder my way over to the mekong and down into laos? Maybe I would be better off just flying to kunming and then catching a boat down to laos? How strict are these "tour group" things in china? Well any information would be great. Thanks all!

It is possible to make the trip from Lhasa to Kunming (the base for heading into Laos) illegaly. I have met a couple of travellers who came this way, and said it was a peice of cake, and great fun.
Be warned though, it's a very adventurous trip - you would be hitching with Tibetan truck drivers. The consequences of getting caught are far worse for them than for you. If you are caught, you will be fined and/or sent back. Just tell them you're coming from Kunming, and you'll be returned there. Or else just fly. It's a lot easier. Good Luck!
