bus to Pokhara

Birganj to Pokhara, buses are usually in the morning... i think eight hours run.

Taxis also available. Fares don't know... but like Indian fares, not expensive.

An extremely active Nepal forum is www.yetizone.com. You'll get all your answers there. Has a separate bulletin board for travel partners.

Hi avid,
Thanks a lot.
I have checked TT,yetizone and few other small forums on nepal, but nowhere found satisfactory answer.
I'll reach Raxaul by 3021 Mithila Express at around 8.35am. I want to know if I can reach Beshisahar on the same day.

* Train late factor cannot be over-ruled

Yes, you can reach Besishahar same day. Cops at border crossing sometimes harass travellers. This may mean 60 to 120 mins more lost.

If you take a taxi, you can reach Besishahar even if its late... say by 23:00 hours

By bus... you might have to change two or three buses...

The route... Birganj, Hetauda, Bharatpur, Narayangarh, Mugling, Dumre, Besishahar.

his local number is .....let me check on my mobile ........... yups it's 09450433905 ...his name is babua....this chap has loads of contact and is pretty handy with getting things done for you cheaply ....Like instead of paying 85 dollars for my ticket from Simara to Kathmandu I only paid 3000 Nepali.....:-) ....
In your case if the flights are expensive he also has a cab and might take you with a cheaper rate....

Some information on crossing the border with a car from Raxaul to Birgunj:
I crossed on 08.07.2013
The Bhansar office (Nepal side check post) is open from 5 am in the morning to 10 pm.
You can take your car to Nepal provided you have original papers on you.
The moment you reach the office you will be mobbed by the touts who operate there.
Let them help you. Harmless fellows, charge you 20 rs for filling up the forms and getting the permits.

I had to go for one night, therefore had to pay for two days (the checkout time is 10 PM).
The total per day tax for bringing your car is 300 INR.
If you are planning to return the same day then the damage is rs. 300(bhansar) + Rs 20 (Tout).
If the stay is for a period of more than one day then you have to get an additional permit from the yatayat dept.
The damage here is Rs.300 INR. Don't know the actual cost as dint get any receipt.
The Birgunj municipality will charge you 100 NR for crossing the town.
At Pathlaiya check post you need to get a number plate for NR 50.

Hi Trekandlive
There are buses for Pokhara from Birgunj Bus Park in morning at 6.30, 7.30, 8.30 and 9.30, these buses are local type and there is no advance resevation available. As per my knowledge shared taxis are not available for Pokhara. There are night buses also for Pokhara, you can book ticket in advance for these night buses.

Thanks
Alok

Thank you for the information. I shall be going to Birganj in a few days. I have read/heard that the Nepalese border takes USD only for visa applications. Is that true?
I have been informed that I have to get a 5-day visa. Is that true? However, I shall be leaving within 24 hours of arriving (leaving at 8:00am the next morning. Is a one or two day visa available? I believe that the cost of the visa is USD5.00 per day. Is that true, and again, can I pay for it in INR?
Do hotels take Indian rupees? Can you recommend a decent, cheap hotel in Birganj? I have read that the Hotel Prakash is cheap, but horribly maintained. Do you know if that is true?
Any other information that you can provide to someone on his first visa-run to Nepal will be greatly appreciated.
