Monsoon Trekking
Hey all,
This is my first post in months... Anyway, the g/f and I have a month and a half off for our summer vacation and are thinking about attempting Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit in August. I'm well aware that the monsoon will be fairly full on down on the plains, but I've read that EBC and the northern side of the Annapurna massif are protected by the rain-shadow. So, what I'd love to know is what's it like trekking in August in these regions? If we go, will we be without a view for the whole month? Etc, etc... Any advice is greatly appreaciated! Cheers Rob ![]()

Nice to see your name online Rob.
Again, no advice, but wondering if wellies would be best for monsoon trekking, they do some really nice colours these days, or the old 'R' & 'L' if you prefer. ![]()

I'd like to suggest the Trekker Board on YetiZone.com. You are likely to find a better informed audience
I had a similar question a while back for an earlier time frame (June). What I learned was that at lower altitudes, you have to deal with leeches. It is better at higher altitudes. I did also read about the "rain-shadow" at higher altitudes... |

Yes, your assumptions are correct. The rain shadow regions receive lesser rain. Views are unpredictable. It wont be covered all the time... just some of the time. But you should be at the right place when it is clear... thats the tricky part. I have trekked in the monsoon... its not all that bad.

Monsoon trekking
June, July and August are not considered the best of months for trekking in Nepal. In the lower reaches you will encounter leeches and if it rains long and hard, you are likely to have landslides. Views are not very clear because of low cloud.
However, June, July and August are the prime trekking months for Ladakh and Tibet. So you might want to consider doing a trip in those areas. A climb up Stok Kangri or a trek up the Markha Valley is very much possible in August. |
