Maldives stop over - how is it?

Hello fellow travellers,

I will be backpacking throughout South if India in November and I am planning a 4,5 days stay on the Maldives all by myself to relax, practice some yoga and to do some snorkeling. Of course I am also quite curious how the maldives are and as I am in the region I found it a great opportunity to take my flight back via Male.

My questions:

Is there an island that has a resort with less expensive rooms (e.g. below 100 USD)? Can I book hotels apart from packages for one week?

Is there a special island which is favoured by backpackers in general or where there are individual travellers?

Has anyone experience with the maledives travelling by him/herself? (really only honeymooners around???)

I have no experience with diving. Any suggestions on what to do on the Maledives except from snorkelling?

I would be really happy to receive your ideas!!
