Hi,

I am planning to visit Kathmandu, Nepal from Kolkata by road. I will be driving from Kolkata.
Can you please first tell me whether Indian Cars are allowed to enter in Nepal? My car is registered in Kolkata and I am an INDIAN Citizen having valid ID proof and passport. By I will be accompanying by others who don't have passport but valid ID proofs like PAN Card, Voters ID Card.
So please let me know whether I can take my car to Nepal.
If so please let me know what route should I follow?
Which border will be easier for me to cross? Should I go via North Bengal or via Bihar (Raxaul border).
If anybody has idea about the road condition there it will be great help to me.
But again all depends on whether I am allowed to enter Nepal along with my Car.

With regards,
Souvik.

First of all I would like to say that below is my Nepal tour experience. I dropped the idea to visit Nepal via road with my own Car. Took flight from Kolkata to Kathmandu, the once choice was Indian Airlies, though the service was not great.
It might be helpful to you in case you plan a tour in Nepal.

I would like to write my experience in two parts one is regarding the Nepal tour in general and other part is about my experience in Kolkata regarding the Nepal honorary PRR and Ashmit Tours and Travels.
I have got some details about the Nepal from welcomenepal.com. There I found the contact details of Ms. Maitrayee Ray and Ashmit Travels. I contacted her for some information regarding Nepal.
Please find below the interaction I had with her.
1) I contacted her for an appointment to get some information regarding Nepal tour.
2) She gave an appointment.
3) I asked for few details and she told me to pay 500.00 as advance before sharing any information.
4) I paid Rs 500 and she sent me an itinerary after few days.
5) I found she has asked for Rs 20000.00 per head only for hotel charges and transportation for 7 days.
6) I found it too high and rejected that proposal.
7) I asked her to arrange for booking in Nepal domestic airlines.
8) She asked me to pay in cash and only in cash, no bank transfer, no cheque.
9) I paid the amount and got 4 tickets from Kathmandu to Pokhara on 10th Oct and Pokhara to Jomsom 11th Oct. Though I asked for tickets to Jomsom at around 8:30 A.M / 9:00 AM she managed to book at 7:20 A.M. She charged to service charge of Rs 125 per person.
10) I went to Kathmandu on 9th and took flight to Pokhara on 10th Oct morning. While doing so I also verified the conformation of the ticket to Jomsom.
11) On 11th morning at around 6:30 AM I went to Pokhara airport to take flight to Jomsom. I found that the agent (via whom the Ashmit Travels booked the ticket) cancelled the ticket without even informing me. The agent cancelled the ticket on 10th afternoon at around 5:00 pm.
12) I had to show all the papers to the airlines authority and somehow using some contacts I could manage to get some new tickets.
13) After returning Kolkata I sent a mail asking for the clarification.
14) Few days later I got a call from Ms. Maitrayee Ray and she told me that she will let me know the details after investigating the matter.
15) Till now I received no communication. (13th December 2010)
My experience is that I will never do any business with Ashmit Tours and Travels. Please go through my next part of this report and you will get to know that practically you don’t need to go through any of these agents for booking.
My Nepal tour was fantastic. In Nepal too many domestic airlines is in operation. Getting an air ticket is of no hassles.
My tour plan:
1) Arrive at Kathmandu. I would rather say avoid Kathmandu if possible. Yes it is possible I have done it while coming back to Kolkata, India. Night 1 ; Stay at Kathmandu. I have written a review of my stay. You can find the same here.
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...Kathmandu.html
2) Day 2: Arrive at Pokhara, nice place to stay. My reviews of my stay
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...a-Pokhara.html
3) Day 3: Morning flight to Jomsom, a cold desert kind of place.
4) Day 4: Way to Muktinath, you can trek, take a jeep or combination of both.
5) Day 5: Way to Beni via local bus and local Jeep and sometime trek. Practically route doesn’t exist, but Jeeps are there to serve. This was a day long activity, starting at 8 morning to end at 9 night.
6) Day 6: Way to Pokhara and take rest.
7) Day 7: Rest at Pokhara.
8) Day 8: From Pokhara to Kathmandu and then Kathmandu to Kolkata, this was hectic but rather less hectic than a stay a Kathmandu.
