Hi friends,
Now it is my turn to ask for some help to plan may trip. I’ve never been to Nepal so just decided to have another close view of Himalayas from trans-Himalayan trade route through the Kali Gandaki Gorge or Andha Galchi (According to the difference between the river elevation and these peaks, this is the world's deepest gorge).

This October we would like to hike up to Muktinath and we’ll avail flight from Jomsom airstrip during return journey to Pokhara. Let me post my itinerary for your valuable comments.

Date >> From >> Mode / Via >> O/N (Altd)
15-Oct-10 >> Kolkata >> Train >> Train
16-Oct-10 >> Raxaul >> Bus / Jeep >> Pokhara (820m)
17-Oct-10 >> Pokhara >> >> Pokhara (820m)
18-Oct-10 >> Pokhara >> Jeep upto Nayapool (42KM) >> Thikedunga (1525m)
19-Oct-10 >> Thikedunga >> Via Ghorepani (2775m) >> Deorali (? m)
20-Oct-10 >> Dewrali >> Hike up to Poon Hill (3210m/10531ft) >> Tatopani (1189m)
21-Oct-10 >> Tatopani >> >> Ghasa (2080m/6824ft).
22-Oct-10 >> Ghasa >> >> Larjung (2560m)
23-Oct-10 >> Larjung >> >> Marpha (2665m/8743ft)
24-Oct-10 >> Marpha >> >> Kagbeni (2810m)
25-Oct-10 >> Kagbeni >> >> Muktinath (3802m/11512ft)
26-Oct-10 >> Muktinath >> >> Jomsom (2713m)
27-Oct-10 >> Jomsom >> Flight * >> Pokhara (820m)
28-Oct-10 >> Pokhara >> Local >> Pokhara (820m)
29-Oct-10 >> Pokhara >> O/N Bus >> Night Service
30-Oct-10 >> Beergunj >> Raxaul >> O/N Train
31-Oct-10 >> Train >> Train >> Kolkata

Is it good or you think any alteration would be even better?

Thanks in advance.
- Somnath

It is no point walking up the Kali Gandaki as it is a jeepable road now going to poon Hill is fine.. the road from tatopani to Jomsom is very busy and dusty jeeps and motor bikes.. if you want go by jeep !

Jeeps…. Bikes…. busy roads !!!!!! Ohhhh……
We are really interested to enjoy Kali Gandaki gorge but if trek route is not a quiet trail then …… we prefer trek routes because it is not touristy !!

Sujoy thank you so much for your reply and looks like you have some firsthand information and I would like to request you to share some more info plz. So far I know basic requirements like accommodation / food these are not a problem in Nepal. But it would be really helpful if you can provide some tips for this trail like porter charges (is it better to hire from Pokhara or Nayapul would be just fine?) / Availability of electricity (to recharge our camera batteries) / availability of mobile networks (I don’t want to carry one extra burden for Pokhara only).

Sujoy, correct me if I am wrong, it seems like Poon Hills part (sunrise) is similar to Dzongri Top (Sikkim) hike; isn’t it? Then what would be a good time to start from Thikedunga / Deorali to enjoy sunrise from Poon Hills?

I can understand that I am asking so many questions but really can’t find many people (personally known to me) trekking from Nayapul to Muktinath ! Everybody prefers Pokhara > Jomsom flight and Jomsom > Muktinath trek.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Somnath,
I am replying to your queries:

porters should be 700-800 nepali Rs per day. I am recommending Prakash Sapkota who I have used and is reliable. He is in Pokhara and can be reached at 009 77 98065 36975. He is often on trek so you may have to wait to get him.
Mobile phones - nepal sim cards will work in some places
batteries - most lodges have solar power so you can charge. They may ask for some payment for this.
Poon Hill- 40 min from Ghorepani and on a hill top. Similar to Dzongri top but from Ghorepani you can also see the mountains whereas from the Dzongri bungalow you are blocked by the hill. You have to stay in Ghorepani for the night.
Avoid the tatopani to Jomsom walk .. it is not nice any longer. I understand that they are making a new trail on the east bank by passing the road but I havent got any information on this. Hope this helps you

No need to go to Deorali in your itinerary. Most people do Poon Hill from Ghorepani for the sunrise. You don't really need porters, if you can carry ~12Kgs which includes your sleeping bag. Batteries can be recharged in the tea houses.

If Muktinath is not really important to you, you could as well do Poon Hill and head into Annapurna Sactuary and do the South Annapurna Base Camp (4130m) Trek, which is also very spectacular.

Alternately, you could skip both the treks and do the Annapurna Circuit Trek and see Muktinath and fly back from Jomsom.

Day 01: Pokhra to Naya Pul driving for 2 hr. and walk to Tirkhedunga for 6 hrs,
Day 02: Trek to Ghorepani (5 hr).
Day 03: to Tatopani (for 7-8 hrs, all the way down) with visiting Poonhill for sun rising.
Day 04: Tatopani to Rukse Chahara
Day 05: Rukse Chahara to Lete
Day 06: Lete to Tukche
Day 07: Tukche to Kagbeni
Day 08: to Muktinath
Day 09: to Jomsom/ the last day of trek.
Day 10: Fly back to Pokhara

Rajib
Room charge is about Rs 200 to 400 per day ( nepali Rs) depending on lodge.
Food is expensive by Indian standards-all nepali Rs
Dal Bhat Rs 300
Tea Rs 30
Noodle Soup rs 100 etc
Charge is more of less the same if you go to ABC or Jomsom side as all lodges follow the ACAP rate chart for fooding which is fixed.
One Indian Re is 1.6 Nepali Rs.

You can get buses from Pokhara to Nayapul.. they leave the Pokhara main bus stand every hour. I am not sure on the bus fare but it is not likely to be very much as the journey will take about 1.5/2 hours by bus

Sorry, it took really long time to search alternative route / Rly. Ticket reservation / visit to Travel and tourism Festival etc.
Sujoy, thank you so much for your help. I understand your point to avoid walk Tatopani > Jomsom. I would like to discuss something in details… that may not be possible in a thread. I’am sending you a PM.

RWeHavingFunYet, thank you. Let me clarify about ‘Deorali’. Assuming the distance of Deorali I just thought to save 15-20 min walk in early morning. I just wanted to save this 15 min to reach Poon Hill before sunrise.

"Poon Hill and head into Annapurna Sactuary and do the South Annapurna Base Camp (4130m) Trek, which is also very spectacular."
I am really interested to know about this one. RWeHavingFunYe, could you please suggest a rough itinerary / some information (please consider that I should be back to Pokhara on 28th Oct because I cannot miss my train from Raxaul on 30-Oct-10).

Alternately, as per your suggestion I was trying to prepare another itinerary to cover Annapurna Circuit Trek + Muktinath and fly back from Jomsom….
Friends, please verify the plan ……. Does it look like hectic / backbreaking?
