Kathmandu to Varanasi
Lonely planet states that Air Necon has daily flights from KTM to Varanasi. However, thier website is out of date and their phone numbers are off the hook. Does anyone know an airline besides for Air India which services this route? ( Air India is sold out)
Any reccomendations for doing this route? Will it be easier for me to figure it out once I am in Kathmandu? |

It doesn't look to much out of date to me, but I take it you have allready tried contacting them since you say their telephone numbers are of the hook.
Indian Airlines flies from Kathmandu to Varansi nonstop! I tried to get all the flight details to you and pass them onto here, but it was impossible for me to get into their homepage. But give it a go! http://indian-airlines.nic.in/ |

Does anybody have any experience in the Kathmandu - Varanasi route? Im going to do it by bus .. and was wondering which border town to head to. I see Sunauli and Raxaul ... why is Sunauli always the one to be mentioned?
Overnight buses? Can anyone help? |

Royal Nepal fly to Varanasi. Jet airways and Air Sahara also fly into Nepal so maybe they have a flight to Varanasi.
If you are going by bus avoid booking buses all the way to Varanasi as they are over prices and not necessarily very sure. You good take a bus from Indian Sunali to Gorakpur where you could try for a train to Varanasi if you are over buses. Sunali is the most popular border as it is 24 hours and has the most facilities. Must be added however the town is not that nice.

Hey
What time of year will you be there? I would probably stay in the Kathmandu valley if you only have 5 days. It is easy to get arround and so much to see. Kathmandu 2 days, Bhaktapur 1-1 1/2 days Patan 1/2 day. Easy to do by bike if you are up to it. Could go up to Nagakot or Dulikeld for views and walking. If you have enough time and it's not too hot i.e. if you are not going between now and about August. Then could go from Kathmandu to Chitwan. Which is only approx 5 hours from Sunali. 2 days in Chitwan National park. |

Ill be there late June ... which I guess will be quite hot. But its okay ... I hear it goes up to 35 .. thats what I get for summer in my hometown. Im in the equator... heat is my thing.
Id like to spend time in National Parks .. but I guess I wont have much time for that.. its okay. I like the biking idea between the cities ... I guess its easy to rent a bike? |

someone mentioned to me the other day that flights no longer go to Varanasi, due to security concerns.
Not sure exactly how true this is, but personally I can remember Varanasi airport as a bit of an experience. ie pushing to get through customs (no orderly queues) the taxi to just outside town, the bicycle ride which seemed to be miles thru to finally Dasawamedh ghat just at dusk and having to settle with Shanti gh which feels more like a prison than a gh. Then the next day took the whole day to get money changed and train tickets out of there. The missus wasn't very impressed at all and was wanting to leave India after that first days experience. |
