Jomsom Trek

Hi,

I'm going to Nepal this March and trying to do the Jomson Trek.
I still don't know if I should do it clockwise or anti-clockwise.
What do you think is better?
1. Trekking from Pokahara to Jomsom or Muktinath and fly back from Jomsom?

Or

2. Flying to Jomsom, walking to Muktinath and going back to Pokahara?

I think I prefer the second alternative but I really don't know.

And does anyone know how long it will take? In all the trekking books there are variety between 9 days for the trek or 14 days or even more
Do they mean 9 or 14 days for oneway?

ooops so many questions...

Hello Angelika,
I did the Jomsom trek in April 2001. I flew from Pokhara to Jomsom and then walked up to Kagbeni and Muktinath, and then walked all the way down. If you are not so fit then this is an easier option, although one days walk from Tatopani to Ghorepani is all uphill (about 900Meters). It took me 6 days and I was really unfit. If you have the time then it is worth staying for a night at Kagbeni/Muktinath.
Happy travels,
IainC.

Going downhill along the Kali Gandaki is (mostly) easy going. You will probably need a days rest in jomosom if you fly up (you won`t hit the ground with feet running at close to 3000 m) before ascending to Muktinath.

I imagine (spring is the only season I have not experienced in the Himalayas) that the nights can be nippy - I would bring a good ( 3 season) sleeping bag.
A link to the general weather in the region :

Kagbeni - wish i had stayed there when i passed there , many years ago..

Even though no tourists have been caught in the crossfire between the government and the gerilla , it would be wise to check the development and keep a Plan B in handy. Apart from the obvious sources (the bbc south asia webpage etc) a good source is

www.hec.org

This have been a good site to learn things like when the Jomosom strip have been closed and info on political/safety issues. There is a newsletter you can subscribe to.

Happy trails
