Jaynagar (India) to Janakpur (Nepal) Border Crossing???

I have just returned to the UK after my first trip to India (Calcutta and Darjeeling Area) .... and yes you have guessed I want to go back.

The trip I want to do involves the following :-

1/ Travel by Road from Darbhanga to Jaynagar
2/ Travel on the Train from Jaynagar to Janakpur (in Nepal)
3/ Spend 2 Nights in Janakpur - (Steam Train charters planned)
4/ Then return to Jaynagar by Train and then to Patna by Road.

We will get Indian and Nepalese Visa's in London before we travel.

I will be travelling with a party of approx 10-15 Brits.

Now the questions :-

1/ Can UK citizens (UK Passport) cross the Indian/Nepal border (Legally) here?

2/ Do we have to change all our Indian Rupee’s into Nepalese Rupee’s when we cross?

Many thanks

Dave

I don't know when this journey is planned for, and I can't answer any of your questions, but I've just read the following on the Times Of India website....

Quote:
Railway minister Lalu Prasad inaugurated the much-awaited Jainagar-Darbhanga broad guage section of ECR on Monday by flagging off the Jainagar-Sealdah Gangasagar Express at Jainagar. A huge crowd witnessed the inaugural ceremony.

After flagging off the train, the railway minister said that the
popular Janaki Express, which earlier ran between Jainagar and
Forbesganj via Saharsa, will again be restored soon.

He said he would also introduce the Garib Rath between Jainagar and New Delhi shortly.

New Delhi-Darbhanga and Saryug-Yamuna Express trains have been extended upto Jainagar from Tuesday.
The Indian Railway website spells Jainagar - JAYNAGAR (station code JYG)

Jaynagar-Sealdah Gangasagar Express (Daily, 3A & SL only)

Train 3186, Jaynagar 15:35, Sealdah 06:55

Train 3185, Sealdah 15:40, Jaynagar 07:55

New Delhi-Darbhanga and Saryug-Yamuna Express

Both trains will go to Hajipur (close to Patna), but are likely to depart Jaynagar at about 12:50 (Daily), and 06:20 (Tu, F, Su.), so will probably be no use to you.

Unfortunately the border crossing is not open for foreigners - only Nepali and Indians may cross here. Also, I am not sure if the train is running at the moment.
