Is it safe to go Kathmandu ????

Hey Guys!!!

I m coming India after 9 years, landing on 19th June from Canada. Was wondering is it safe to go Kathmandu, as my uncle was saying there's problem going on of some maoist thing. And is there any Direct Bus from Delhi To Kathmandu ? Where can i find the link to it ? Or can u message me any travel agents of India who can help me book flight or bus, which ever is cheap.

thnx alot....

The best way to know if it's safe to travel somewhere is to check out government advice.
In this case, the Canadian government has no warning about travel to Nepal:
http://www.voyage.gc.ca/countries_pa....asp?id=205000
It's worth reading that page for more info on the general situation there.

The Maoists are (tchnically) part of the Government now in Nepal, but the government itself is....not very good. There's a lot of unrest, but you are unlikely to be affected by this in Kathmandu, particularly in the tourist areas and sights.

Yes, there are buses direct from Delhi to Kathmandu, they leave from Manju Ka Tilla, the Tibetan colony, in the early afternoons. You can read about my experience travelling the other way here:

How not to enter/leave Nepal: an idiot speaks

Alternatively, and more comfortably, you can get a train Delhi to Gorakhpur, a bus or taxi from there to the border at Sunauli, and a bus from there to Kathmandu (or Pokhara).

Lately there have been more bandhas/conflict in the Terai area caused by the Madheshi/Tharu but for the time being I think it has calmed down - AFAIK KTM valley, Pokhara, etc. are safe now (I am going in 5 weeks) - best thing is to ask locals before going to an area since it can be difficult to anticipate trouble, also read KTM Post, Himalayan Times, etc. on the current political situation.

I'm actually in Bhaktapur only 15 km east of Kathmandu for the celebration of the New Nepali Year. I've also been four or five days in Khatmandu and must go again next friday. Life here is absolutely normal and people enjoys their life as much as possible. The main problem in the country is the electricity. They have only between four and six hours per day, something more at the weekend.

Go to Nepal

Actually, and this is very unusual for India-travellers, the "load-shedding" in Nepal is at specific times, with a given time-table, not just in chaotic bits and pieces like in India, where the power is turned off whenever. So ask at the hotel desk when are the off-times exactly. It is important for your Internet access and to know when to seek refuge under the moskito net, because the fan turns off.

People there are so friendly, they will hardly tell you when the power is going to be turned off. So be prepared to get caught in the middle of an e-mail, but unlike as in India, you can prevent that to happen in Nepal.

Hello All,

I am from Kathmandu, Nepal and now in India for the last 7 years. I frequently visit Nepal and get in touch with developments in Nepal.

Anyone can go to Nepal now. Yes, there may be one or two strikes in Terai Region but Kathmandu, Pokhara and hilly and mountainous regions, famous for tourist, is very safe and good place to visit/trek.

You can get direct bus from delhi to kathmandu from Majnu ka tila, New Arunanagar Colony, Tibetan Market, Delhi but i do not suggest to travel by bus. They travel almost for 34 hours to reach kathmandu and also not that comfortable. U can take plane from delhi........or take train till gorakhpur india and travel by road.

Whoever goes to nepal, enjoy a lot n be/feel safe.

Oh, that is my dream... I was in Lhasa in '05 (along with Samye, Drak Yerpa caves, Drigung Thil, and climbing Mt. Emei in China) but my goal is to do the Kailash kora. If I complete that, the Annapurna Circuit, EBC, and climb the other 3 sacred Buddhist/Daoist mountains in China, then I can die happy....maybe....

Actually, my husband(in KTM) says that isn't always the case - usually he will know when the power will be out but not always...

Also the power isn't always out uniformly in KTM so for example the night before his visa interview at the USA embassy it was important he contact me and mobile connections are not good, so even though the power was out in Jayabageshwori(his house) and Gaushala, there was still power on in Boudha and he was able to go to a cybercafe.

Ma kasai ko dai hoina.)

Regarding going to kathmandu in this season, I say go ahead. The situation in tourist areas is safe and peaceful. Regarding light, yes, there is a problem. But, Nepal government is trying to buy power from India. So, this problem also should be over.

But, I think travelling to hilly areas and mountains, and trekking should not have that great nexus with power. You can still check your internet whenever power is there. And People know when power will be on and when it's off.

I say Have a great Time.
