| Inexpensive hotels in Colombo, Mount Lavinia Hi, I'm headed to Sri Lanka next week on a visa run (of course), but have been profoundly unable to purchase a Lonely Planet guide, out of date anyway at 2003, and can't find ANY guide whatsoever in either Mysore or Bangalore... SO, could you folks suggest a good hotel, not too expensive in either Colombo or Mount Lavinia; we'll figure the rest out after we've arrived. I have to kill 3 days, apply for visa to China, then one to come back to India... If you have other recommendations at Kandy, etc. we'll be there for 10 days. Cheers! scott |

| Sri Lanka guest houses - Colombo & Kandy, also Mirissa Hi, so we just returned from almost two wonderful weeks in Sri Lanka, and I thought I'd share with the list the two places we found in Colombo and in Kandy that were quite good value, clean, etc. in Colombo: Eestee Rest House No. 27, Jayah Road, Bambalapitiya, Colombo 4 (not too far from the Bamb. railway station & Majestic shopping mall) around 1200 for shared bath, 1500 for private - good value & very friendly in Kandy: Sevena Gest House 84, Peradeniya Road (a 20 rupee rickshaw ride as it's less than 1 km from the railway station - an easy walk too) 990 or slightly negotiable for a fan room, very friendly group there that will advise & take care of you We also found the beach at Mirissa in the south to be just perfect, and wonderful fun with high surf, though a bit more challenging for swimming... we stayed at Ocean Moon (recommended by many books); though the food is a little less Sri Lankan and too oriented toward presumed EuroAmerican tastes, the place was also quite clean & friendly - 900 for a cabana was great so, if you're headed island-ward, check these places out & have a good stay!!  |

| I think most hotels in colombo, Mt. Lavinia and Negombo charage upwards of US$ 35..minimum. You will find lots of hots in the US$ 50 - 80 per day range.. |
