Indo-Nepal border closed for UP elections

This border closing may be over by the time you read this, but wanted to post it anyway. I receive Nepal news alerts and literally every week, there is some strike/bandh/curfew in the Terai region (bordering India). If you plan to go to Nepal right now, flying is the way to go.

Indo-Nepal border closed for elections

Kathmandu, Apr 21 (ANI): The Indo-Nepal border has been closed for three days from today ahead of the fourth phase Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections on Monday.

The Borders at Banke, Bardiya and Dang bordering Bahraich, the Terai town of eastern Uttar Pradesh (UP) have been closed.

Barring emergency vehicles, vehicles belonging to security personnel and those used for marriage processions, all vehicles would be stopped from crossing over the border.

Security personnel are patrolling in the sensitive border areas to avoid any untoward incident.

Good warning post, sirensongs! Glad I'm flying when I go mid-May! Although I see my airline choice, Air Sahara has been taken over by Jet Air - suppose the plane will still go!!

And no doubt it will be closed again as we approach June 20, when the Nepal Constitutional Assembly elections are scheduled...

Oh, I thought everyone knew - I should have made that the headline.

Nepal Con. Assembly Elections have been POSTPONED until (probably) this coming November!

I repeat: there will be no Nepal elections in June 2007! It's official, you can read it on BBC and everywhere. I thought that was just soooo Nepali -to agitate for a year for something, then when it's time, go, "Oh, we're just not together enough, yet. Bholi-parse, ke garne?"

However, just today there was announcement of yet another Terai strike so never a dull moment!

Dherai raamro! So if I decide to stay for my whole 6 weeks in Nepal it should be good - for now...as long as I stay north...
