indian citizen planning backpacking trip across south east asia
hi everyone
i am an indian citizen planning a "by road" backpacking trip across south east asia including burma, thailand, laos, cambodia and malaysia. now i have checked on internet and according to wikipedia, visa is not required to travel in these countries for indian citizens or it can be obtained on arrival. since the source in wikipedia i assume the information to be correct. however, what i want to know is if it is possible to travel from india across all these countries via road. searching the internet i found that a road has laid down between india and burma..does anyone knows if it is open for general public. also i have heard that it is possible to travel to burma via bangladesh on road( which again does not require visa). however i could find no information on border crossing by road between burma and other countries.
also assuming that no visa is actually required and it is possible to travel by road..but will the visa waiver still be applicable..pardon me if it sounds lame..but i think there is always a possibility of the officers at border crossing to be unaware of the visa waiver enjoyed by indian citizens..though this may not be the case at the airports.
thanks in advance to everyone who reads and answers..any help is greatly appreciated..

I personally would not rely on Wiki information for information regarding visas. I would not assume anything to be correct unless you can verify that with a consulate. You will need a VISA to travel in these countries..the question is whether you can get one on arrival and if so for how long.
Best thing is to see the Consulate websites for these countries in India.
Yes Thailand you can get a VOA on arrival but that might be only for 15 days.
Burma - you cannot and should not risk land crossings. They will literally shoot you down. (stories I heard on my recent trip to Bangladesh). I was 30 km away from Myanmar.
Your best option is to start your travels in Thailand. You can cross into Laos (from north - closest thai city Chainag Mai),Cambodia ( you can cross from Laos) and Malaysia (cross from southern Thailand) by road, boat train etc.
For Myanmar you will need to fly from BKK to Rangoon. That is the legal port of entry for Myanmar for tourists.
I remember waiting in Vientinne to get my Cambodian visa (had a Indian passport). Not sure why. Either because the VOA was for few days or VOA was not available then.
My advice check the consulate websites.

Indian citizens definitely don't get a "visa free" or "visa on arrival" facility in Malaysia.I would say you must carefully check the requirements before you set off.
