From New reports in the Times of India:http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/i...ow/7530619.cms

Quote:
The passenger ferry service between Tuticorin and Colombo is likely to commence in the third week of March 2011.

The journey between Tuticorin and Colombo would cover 48 nautical miles or a little short of 100km and would take 12 hours. The journey is expected to cost 30 per cent less than the airfare and passengers would be allowed to carry upto about 100kg of baggage.

Chairman of the Tuticorin Port A Subbiah said initially the voyage would be thrice a week and later it may be enhanced to a daily services after review in three months. Initally the passengers were expected to be primarily ethnic, traders and a small section of tourist, but steps would be taken to enhance tourism in this voyage, he said.
BTW, this is my first thread, after having over 2000 posts.

Well, I'm always saying this when Sri Lanka gets mentioned, but hey, people, must you go there? It is a really nasty, repressive regime. Other countries get boycotted for much less, Sri Lanka, somehow, seems to get away with the world not noticing.

Hi Nick: When there is a very strategically located seaport at Trincomalee, some western powers let such things as genocides slip through the media, just the same as when there is a lot of oil to be had. But I trust you already knew that.

I remember there used to a ferry ages ago between India and Sri Lanka and they've been talking about restarting it for a while now. Is it confirmed that they are starting up or does everyone think this is yet another rumour?

There are a lot of news reports. We shall see most likely in March. In the meantime just recall that the fare is only about 20% cheaper than air and air may come down with the competition..

While there have been false starts earlier, I think is for real.
The ship for the service has been contracted too. While it was supposed to be heading to Tuticorin, it has now been diverted to Libya to evacuate Indians there. However the start date of sometime in Mar 3rd week is still not changed.

Yep - I think it's for real too - just googled various sites and they are confirming it will start soon! It just seems to have happened with no real warning - remember trying to find info for a ferry in December and there was no mention of it starting.... Great if it does though (for someone like me who doesn't really like flying and who tries to keep it to the minimum).

I double agree with you Nick. Not to mention, How much the Indian government is helping srilanka to come back to normal.

LTTE killed Rajivgandhi and Mrs Rajivgandhi has helped to wipe out the total tamil population itself.

Is taking action against the terrorists oppressive? I don't concur with that. I agree that a few innocent people die due to this, but isn't the place better with no terrorist activity going on?
TERRORISTS are terrorists - they need to be eliminated so that rest of the people can live their lives without fear.

You could argue the same way for Punjab - it was one of the most dangerous places in the 80's. All the shops would be closed by 4.00 at people would have to stay indoors. But, after Mr. Gill carried on the elimination task, look at Punjab now - one ofthe most prosperous and safe states in India.

Utterly irrelevant, engharsh. Did I mention any support or sympathy for LTTE? No, because I have none. Many of my refugee Tamil friends had run from LTTE as much as they had run from the SL Govt.

The Sri Lankan govt has been determined to marginalise, if not wipe out, the Tamil population since independence (no doubt, it is yet another mess the Brits created and walked away from).

There is no freedom of speech in Sri Lanka (only praise for the ruling family is permitted) and they are still hell-bent on victimising Tamils. I don't approve of terrorism, but if terrorism arises out of such action, the governments have only themselves to blame.

I still suggest that people do not support the Sri Lankan economy. Give money to a tamil charity instead, and chose somewhere else for your tropical holidays.

So does anyone have any idea of what the fares are yet (one way). I googled it but couldn't find an answer.
