India to Sri Lanka by boat
I read on wikitravel that there are boats from Tuticorin to Sri Lanka, though I don't know whether they take passengers and run on a regular schedule. Has anyone traveled this route to Sri Lanka before? Thanks and cheers!

Completely false. There is something called a civil war that got in the way. Gives you an idea of the weakness of the Wiki concept, romantic but full of manure..

The civil was is supposed to be over now http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/8056752.stm
Or is there still ongoing conflict? |

It is supposedly won.
However, do not under-estimate the nastiness of the the Sri Lankan Government, and please think twice before supporting it with your tourism. |

This military phase is past, the peace hasn't been won. Tragically, the Sinhalese government doesn't seem inclined to take advantage of the opportunity to reach out to the Tamil population..

When the actual hidden agenda is genocide, what can we expect? The latest was a kicking out of UNICEFs rep at the 300 000 strong concentration (internment) camp.

... But back to topic, any ferries between the two countries have been discontinued something like decades ago, and I haven't heard they have been or about to be resumed.

I've done that trip many years ago, a school trip, Rameshwaram to Talaimannar and from there to Colombo by train. 1978/79.

It's not running now, but I have heard that Lanka is keen to restart ferry service. Apparently there's also a rail line somewhere - maybe across Ram's bridge. And then of course there are the jumping monkeys.

As of May 2009 there were no ferries and there is no bridge. All talk between India and Sri Lanka for now. There are plenty of smuggling boats from what i heard.
