The easiest way is probably to fly from Delhi. The most cost effective way may be the bus from Varanasi to Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Obviously the easiest way is by plane from Delhi but if you are not in a hurry you should go by train from Delhi to Gorakhpur, then bus to Sunauli/Birganj and then by bus to Pokhara/Kathmandu/Chitwan... very cheap but a bit hard (I did it both ways last April-May and I'm in my sixties...

ways to nepal

Hi,
cost effective..if you have the time..... 12 hrs by train Delhi to Gorakhpur... share a cab from GKP station Rs 100 a seat, 2.5 hrs to the border at Sonauli.....Rs 30 cycle rickshaw will take you across the border to the bus stand on the Nepal side..... and abt NC 360 for a 8 hr bus trip to Kathmandu, or 5 hrs to Pokhra......enjoy

This information is as per http://www.seat61.com/Nepal.htm

Day 1: Direct buses run from Varanasi to the Nepalese border at Bhairawi (Indian side)/Sunauli (Nepalese side), running several times daily (exact times not known). They take 9 hours and cost about Rs 100 ($2). Walk across the frontier, and spend the night in a hotel in Sunauli.

Day 2: The Sunauli bus station is a few minutes walk from the frontier. Buses to Kathmandu take 9 to 12 hours, cost about 120 Nepalese Rupees ($2). There are many buses daily, either daytime buses leaving regularly until about 11:00 or overnight buses leaving regularly from about 16:00 until 19:00.

Yes I also suggest the Bus route from Delhi-Gorakhpur-Sonauli-Khatmandu. Cheap and best. Or you can directly fly from Delhi Kathmandu INR 10k return tkt.

Thank you for the info on the varnasi route to nepal.
Are there any trains for half the journey and buses for the other part of the journey.
Do the trains cut the distance shorter? Does not matter any route as long as it is shorter and comfortable (leg room) for long distance.
Are these buses luxury buses?

Also is the Bhairavi (Indian side of the border the same as one heard in the ancient story of Lord Bhairavi. Does one get to witness it

kind regards

If you take an ordinary bus from the India border to Kathmandu, it is probably NOT a luxury bus. Jorge Reverter said he did this route and hopefully he will tell us more about the bus.

I did this same route many years ago & at that time the bus was what we called a "little mountain bus". It was small, very uncomfortable, very crowded with local people, you couldn't stand up inside. It had a powerful stinky diesel engine which powered over the mountain & black diesel smoke poured in through the windows.

They probably have more modern ones now! I hope so.

We also took a "tourist" bus from Kathmandu to Agra. This was a more comfortable bus which was more expensive than the local bus but still very cheap. They certainly have buses like that now.

Mainly, it's going to be a long & tiring trip. If you have the time, it's a journey you will never forget! If you want more time in Nepal (which it wonderful & you can spend weeks there), then fly.

There are no trains in Nepal (you probably know that).

I personally think trains are more comfortable than buses because you can stretch out your legs & walk around & there are readily available toilets!
