India to Malaysia and Sumatra (Indonesia) by boat

Hi all hope you are well.

Following my post: India to Thailand overland, I would like to share this issue too.

If I wont be able to reach Thailand through Myanmar, I was considering the following option:

India to Malaysia or Sumatra (Indonesia) oversea, by boat.
Simple question: Did any of you ever hear about boat services that do this routes?

Any suggestion welcome.

I know that in case this will be Legally impossible...I'll fly!

Thank you all
Have a nice day

When you say 'boat', do you really mean a boat? You want to cross the ocean in a boat?

And here it comes, I expected it...yep sound crazy!

I actually meant COMMERCIAL BOAT, OFFICIAL BOAT, BIG BOAT, ANY KIND OF BOAT that is able to make a long distance. Off course I would like very much to avoid a CRUISE SHIP for a matter of money.

Thank you
AAnyy suggestion more then welcome!

Ok, that's a relief. I thought you wanted to cross the ocean in a fisherman's boat.

Regular ferry is available from
Singapore ----> Malaysia and Malaysia -----> Indonesia.
I do not know whether you get them from India. If the option of leaving India by boat is not available, one option might be to fly to Singapore and then take the ferry there....

these days both Singapore and Malayasian airways are offering very low cost flights. Like Thailand package ex Delhi Rs.17999 for 4 nights 5 days, 2 nights in BKK and 2 nights at PTY, coral island tour with speed boat, daily breafast... inclusive of all taxes & airport transfers.

Air will almost certainly be cheaper than any form of sea transport. Even though there maybe numerous cargo ships sailing East from Calcutta and Chennai every week, getting on one of these is pretty much impossible. In fact, most people who want to "overland" with their own transport from Europe to Australia end up stuffing their car, bike, london taxi or whatever into a sea container in Chennai and getting it shipped to Singapore. They then have to fly from there. Bit of a cheat really!

Cheapest air tickets that will jump over Burma from India are usually to Singapore and KL, and you may need to overland from there. Though recently Bangkok also has some great deals too. There are quite a few low cost airlines that do all of these routes, from a huge selection of Indian airports! In my experience, the cheapest ones are from various cities in South India (including Chennai), possibly due to the large numbers of Tamilians living in Malaysia and Singapore.

Have a look at Skyscanner.net where it allows you to do generic seaches between country pairs without putting in specific cities, dates etc.

I know it can be done for under 100 US dollars one way! That's hardly expensive!

Or even cheaper!! Just had a bit of a look around. For example you could fly Trichy to Kuala Lumpur for 2262 Rupees all in. That is only about 30 Euros, or about 45 US dollars!

That is with airasia.com, and the date was the first random one I could conjure up which was 13 October 2009.

Don't hold your hopes up, but you could see if this thread has any pointers for you: To India via the Ocean.

On the (remote) possibility of flying into Myanmar, then proceeding by land into Thailand, see also my comments on your other thread, India To Thailand Overland (... which, after editing, would make it seem next to impossible).

AirIndia Express also flies cheaply from India to Singapore. From Kolkata the price is (for a few random dates) 2000 rp and from Chennai either 2000 or 2500 rp.

I'm planning to go to Sumatra from Kolkata in the beginning of 2010. Flying to Singapore and then continuing by boat/ship seems to be the best choice at the moment.

Well, one of those boats WAS available in 1972, or thereabouts -- from Chennai to Malaysia. But like the mythical ferry from Ramaswaram to Sri Lanka, it's long gone.

Plan on flying.

...Nineteen Seventy Two...reminding me about 1972??? You're right I wish I was there now so the liberty to travel around the globe would not be so manipulated by companies and laws!!!

Thank you all for you help, I'm checking all the links you posted.

And YES I'm considering the idea, the only way though, to FLY to Thailand.

Just so you know though, I would like to share with you all the reason why I decided to undertake this journey:

Leave India from an airport; enter Australia (my final destination) through an airport. Not so exciting to me.

I am 23 years old. I am passionate about travelling. This time I would like to feel the distance, more than 4000km of land, I want to feel them first hand. I would like to give myself the time to adapt to the countries and the environment that changes km after km.

Off-course I really don't feel like risking my life going through Myanmar (Since May there have been rumours)...I'll try to get on board on some cruise (figuring out how)...ALL NOT POSSIBLE NOW? NO BIG DEAL I'll fly to Thailand.

At least I tried.

That's all for now...I'll keep posting though!

Any ideas...issues...doubts... yet welcome!

Nice writing to you all.

Have a nice day

If you're really that keen, what about overland via china? Go from India to Nepal then I presume that Nepal to Tibet is still doable via a bus? The route takes the Friendship highway from Kathmandu to Lhasa and then you can take the new train onwards from there. I'm sure it's been talked about here on IM. Have a look around.

Have a look at http://www.bigfoottrek.com/tibet/kat...and_tour. htm

Yes that would be great! Thank you

Just one little consideration: MONEY!!!

The plan is to reach Australia for specifics personals reasons, I'm afraid I don't have relatively that much time, I thought about that though...was almost considering to...but I decided no to.

Now I actually wrote to some companies of cargo shipping overseas...let's see if I can get something out of them.

I'm also trying to get in touch with some cruises (always asking for a "ride" while working)...

Also: I'M CHECKING FLIGHTS

Thanks for the KEEN

Have a nice day you all!!!
