When does the border open in the morning? I want to do a day trip to Lahore from Amritsar.
And is there a ladies' section for the ceremony, and if so, what's the view like from there? Thanks. |

You can't do a day trip to Lahore without a Pakistani visa, which could take over a week to get in Delhi.

Oh yeah, that should be a lot simpler Janice.......if you PM Bijapuri, he just arrived in Pakistan, he'll know how the visa issues are handled in the US.

We did see an entire section of just women sitting in the bleachers. But the view from the bleachers for both men and women is distant and less desirable, unless you want to mix it up with the crowds. |

I was born in India in 1962. I'm delighted to see India and Pakistan celebrate their border opening, even if it is a cautious truce. After all, India and Pakistan and Bangladesh are one in their history. I hope that this brotherhood overcomes the hostility more in the future. The whole world would like to see less threat and more brotherhood. I realize that the hostility has become bloody at times and that is hard to overcome. If only . . if only the horrendous hostility could be part of the past. And the 2 countries find some truce about Kashmir. We all want that. What's the matter if this region or that region is defined by this political border or that. I fully realize that it hits on very sore spots for both countries. But it's senseless, in my opinion, because this division was created and then instigated since 1947 and there is no need for this kind of violence. Why let India's independence be a sore spot even between brothers? Both governments ought to jail terrorists for life. Then comes my view that India is more committed to truce than Pakistan is.
I stuck my neck out and I can only say that I am speaking from my own limited experience. |

i came across a great pic here, on sepia mutiny, from the border closing ceremony. the link takes you to the SM website generally and today's entry has the phot. after today, you'll need to search for the 9/17/07 entry.
it reminds me of that monty python bit: "walk this way". ![]() if the embedded link doesn't work, try this: www.sepiamutiny.com, or type the url into your browser's address line. i had some trouble getting back to the site with explorer, but it worked fine with firefox. ![]() |

At least on the Indian side, there's a fairly central ladies' section. The segregation is rather well upheld. (autumn 2006)
Not that I have been to such events for a long time, but I got the feeling of soccer fans shouting at one another. |

Here's the thing....

I know this thread is pretty old, but I was wondering if someone can let me know how I can view this ceremony in person? Like how do I get there or if there is a travel agency that specializes in this?
