This kindles the hope for me and many others of new roads in to Tibet. The comments of not allowing anti-Chinese activities in India are chilling, though, esp. when Nepal recently has started to force back Tibetan refugees.

Tibetan Review quotes BB Goorong , political adviser of the Sikkimese Chief Minister : " the chief minister will also explore with the PM the possibilities of launching a bus service between Gangtok and Lhasa".
Until/if the border opens tourists will have to be satisfied with Panmujon-style tourism in the Nathu La : watching mail bags being exchanged in the no-mans land between the barbed wires. |

India & China are now aggreed to open the nathu-La border in Sikkim. It will probably be opened on March next year.
but at first individual tourist can not cross the border. The border opens up only for the business purpose. Later on the tourist can cross the border, but it will take some time. May be in the last monthes of next year. Opening up Nathu-La will be great for the economic development for this region of eastern himalaya. It will boost the tourism sector as well. Tanmoy Goswami |

Latest issue of Himal contains a short article on the state of the road : no infrastructure has been built up either side of the border.
Also another interesting road article , the next dream road to overcome the political hurdles : the WW2 Stillwell supply road : from Assam thru northernmost Burma to Yunnan. |

The current issue of Himal magazine has a cover shot from Nathu La :
![]() The slapstick story behind the shot is well worth reading at himalmag.com . On a less lighter note , Himal also has an online analysis of the border trade between China, Nepal & Tibet (here), and Beijings economcal and political motivations for it. As for the Nathu La , time only will tell if it will have any importance beyond the political symbolism in the immediate future. |

Yes, the Nathu la border is open.
The re-opening, which occurred on July 6, 2006,[16] formally recognises Tibet as part of China by India and Sikkim's accession to India in 1975. The date of re-opening coincided with the birthday of the reigning Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, and was widely seen as a snub to the International Tibet Independence Movement.[7] It was also decided to mark the year 2006 as the year of Sino-Indian friendship.[15] The opening of the pass was marked by a ceremony on the Indian side attended by officials from both sides, including Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling (the chief guest), the Chinese ambassador to India, and the Tibetan Autonomous Region Chairman, Champa Phuntsok. Delegation of 100 traders from India and 100 Tibetans crossed the border to the respective trading towns. Despite heavy rain and chilly winds, the ceremony was marked with the attendance of many officials, locals, and international and local media. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathula_Pass |
