Hi everyone,

My 180 days in India is coming up quickly, and being that I have very little money to spend (which rules out all international flights and crossing into Bangledesh), and am all the way in south India....

I need to figure out the quickest train route from Goa (or anywhere nearby) to Nepal. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, there aren't any direct trains from any Goan cities to Varanasi, Gorakhpur, or anywhere in the vicinity of any Nepal border crossings.

There are direct trains to Gorakhpur from Mumbai as well as from Bangalore, but I was hoping not to have to travel too far in order to catch the long-distance train that will take me more or less all the way to the border.

Any thoughts? Anyone done something like this before?

Thanks everyone!

Lots of Love,

-Dave

Or perhaps it would be quicker to get a train to Delhi, and from there a bus to Banbassa? Just another thought. I'm having some trouble calculating distances.....

Thanks everyone.

Route to Gorakhpur

Take the weekly goa sampark kranti [weekly once every tuesday] to Delhi at 11.20AM from Madgaon every Tuesday, reaches 16.50 the next day via the shortest route as compared to the daily Goa express which takes 2 nights. Take the 2558 SAPT KRANTI EXP leaving at NEW DELH 15:00 and reaching GORAKHPUR JN 04:10 AM next morning. Gorakhpur has decent hotels to stay. You need to transit from Nizamuddin to New Delhi. One more useful piece of advice is to avoid the Jhansi-Kanpur section which is single line and prone to delay and your connection to Gorakhpur from Jhansi will take that route[the goa express takes that route]. The Kerala Sampark Kranti also heads to Delhi from Madgaon and takes the quicker route. You have a choice of 2 trains if you exclude the Rajdhani. There is no direct train to Varanasi or GKP from Goa. I do not think they should waste track space by adding direct trains. There are so many options of connecting trains available. Alternatively there are plenty of trains to GKP or Varanasi from Bombay.

Good advice!

So, now I'm curious about whether the smarter option would be to take the train from Delhi to Gorakhpur, or the bus to Banbassa. The latter seems like a much more manageable distance to cover, even if it is by bus. Any thoughts on this? I haven't been to this part of Uttaranchal - is the elevation of the border crossing low enough that it can be taken in January?

Thank you.

Train is best option to GKP

The Sapt has 2AC and is a more comfortable way of reaching GKP. There are metre gauge services to Nepalganj which is a border town and trains from Gonda go there. There are no reservations and timings are best ascertained by purchasing a north eastern railway railway time table once you get to GKP[not the national one which gives only express timings and the regional ones are available in any book stall in the train station] for the shuttle services from Gonda. Gonda is 2 hours away from Gorakhpur by an express train and the Sapt should connect to the Intercity which halts in Gonda. The Intercity has CC. I am afraid however that the train to Nepalganj does not have ac or reservation. It is a passenger train that, goes through a very beautiful route. You could also take a bus from GKP to Nepal? As for Barbassa I do not have any idea. The usual route is from GKP and nepalganj is another useful entry point.
