Getting to tibet...
Is it easy to hop over to Tibet from north India? OR is there difficulty getting in?
Someone told me that you cant go to tibet from India, but have to go through Nepal. Is that true? |

There is no open border crossing
only route is via Pakistan or Nepal Also buy your Chinese visa before you get to India as I've heard of more than a few being turned down due to Chinese sensitivities about cultural genocide in China or should I say cultural improvement. Also when applying don't state you want to visit Tibet ... This info may now be out of date but was good a couple of years ago The border situation is the same though There isa post on Tibet in the thread shanghai to India

There is a border crossing from India to Tibet but it's only for Indian pilgrims doing the Kailash Kora. My opinion is that the easiest and cheapest way to go is to take a bus from Kathmandu. I went with Green Hill Tours; they take care of the visa formalities. I don't know the current price for their 10 day Drive/Fly package (includes hotels). When I went it cost me around $620. It's not far, you leave Kathmandu on an early morning bus and by evening you're in Milarepa territory.

I was going in May this yr to do the Kailash Yatra, but it was cancelled due to the fact that the Chinese won't let anyone in at the mo', just in case we see them torturing & killing innocent Tibetan's
Apparently the torch is going through Lhasa on 21/22nd of June so the borders may re-open sometime after this??? KK |

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you want to go via jeep (hire-car), you must have a minimum of 4 people to enter Tibet from Nepal. You can't go solo.
Coming back there's no such restriction (ie. you can go solo). Cheers Zoltan
