General strike in Nepal

Hi Guys,
I have planned the ACT trek from Besishahr 30th May onwards. I hear that the border at Sonauli has been shut for the last 10 days due to a strike, AND a big strike began today 20th in Kathmandu, as the government intends tabling the constitution on the 26/27th after waiting for years........this may lead to further political instability....IE..STRIKES.
Question: Can anyone in KTM or Nepal please enlighten me on the situation there...now and in the next 2 weeks...
many thanks

my good friend in kathmandu warned me two weeks ago about planned strikes in June but this is earlier than that. Hopefully someone based there can comment.

I spoke with my husband in KTM today(his mother is very sick) and there have been intermittent strikes since he arrived 2 weeks ago - it is very difficult to predict them at least for the next week until the constitution deadline(27th). If they extend the deadline AGAIN as they have been doing so for the last 4 years the immediate pressure will be off and there will be less likelihood of strikes(this was the case when I was there exactly this time last year). Of course this is Nepal and the different parties who are calling strikes could be fed up that this has been going on for 4 years. I read in nepalnews.com(the best site for Nepal news in English - myrepublica.com is also good) that the tourism industry has been very badly affected by the latest series of strikes and there is pressure to exempt tourist vehicles from the strikes.
Q: Ke garne?

A: Dal bhat khanne, maaya garne, sutne!

nepal strike

Hi Giripriya,

thanks for the information. I agree, in Nepal one can never tell. there have been a couple of times I've been able to get out, or in, barely.....in 2001, the day the country shut down followed by the sad royal family catastrophe.. I most probably will have to cancel the ACT planned for 30th May from Besishahr. any further info will be most appreciated.
thanks
