hello, u can cross over the border at dharchula/darchula. no problems. i used to go to nepal for lunch and then come back after the meal is over . this will put u directly on the kailash mansarover route. if i am not mistaken, there is a road from kathmandu to dharchula.
yes, u can go to narayan ashram from dharchula by jeep.

here r the pics of my journey:

infact you can travel all the way from kathmandu to pithoragarh by bus. Tho it will take a few days. Jhulaghat is the place where you cross over into India to reach pithoragarh.
You can even travel by a vehicle to reach Darchula, Nepal. Very recently this place is connected by a motorable road. From Nepal Darchula to India Dharchula, it's just a bridge across kali ganga river. Open from Morning to Evening.
If you want to do cross country trek thru Nepal, be prepared for poor sanitary and water conditions in off beat rural areas. Very few have done it. till recently Maoists controlled the whole of western Nepal including Darchula region. And they have n't melted away. You will defintely come across them more often than Nepali police.

In 1991 when the western border just opened I went from Pokhara to Ranikhet in 3 days.
Took overnight bus from Pokhara to Nepalgange. Had to wait 23 houurs in Nepalgange as I missed the only bus going west by 1 hour. Next morning left at maybe 5 a.m. for Mahengranagar. Arrived there at 8 p.m.. Next morning took minivan to the border, went through customs in Nepal, walked across border and went through customs on India side and caught a bus to Ranikhet, arriving in the evening around 7 p.m.

Interesting scenery, but couldn't really enjoy it as I had serious diahrrea.

Question Highway

On the main Mahendra Highway, you can travel from Kathmandu Westwards upto Mahendranagar. The border is almost here.

Walk across the bridge [open from morning to evening] over the Kali river to Banbassa on the Indian side.

Pithoragarh is just 69 km North of Banbassa.

Apart from the above info already given....

That's an intersting question and has been on my mind for some time.

You have to try your luck! As the area north of Darchula is controlled by Indian army even though it belongs to Nepal. Say kalapani area, Nepal says it belongs to it. Indian army will be suspecious of your motives. To avoid that you need to carry sufficient documentaion. And there are Nepal army and maoists to tackle with.
I would n't suggest crossing into India from Nepal further than Darchula. Even Nepalis while going on pilgrimage to Mansarovar, transit thru Indian territory from Dharchula till Nabidhang. For Indian leg of the journey they take permits from Indian authorities.
And then, to reach Gunji, even if you are taking the indian route, you need permit from Dharchula. So You have to come to Dharchula for permit even though you attempt crossing from Nepal to India at Gunji.
Without permit from Indian Authorities though you are and Indian citizen, if you enter Gunji from Nepal, you will be arrested.
