Flying From Myanmar to Mumbai ?
Hi.I've tried to search for the info I need without luck.We are going to be making our way through south-east Asia for a few months starting August and by about early November will be in Myanmar wanting to get to Mumbai.
Does anyone know details of airlines or any advice re the best way to fly from Yangon to Mumbai.Presumably we'll have to go via Kolkata or Bangladesh or both?Any ideas would be much appreciated. |

Hey Dino!
Hope to meet you here in Nov ! There is no direct flight to Mumbai from Yangon. You have to change flights at Bangkok, on Thai Airways. However, there are direct flights to Kolkata(bi-weekly) and New Delhi (thrice a week).

Thanks Shimla. For some reason I hadn't thought of the via Thailand option but of course this seems obvious now.Would love to catch up in Yangon! My partner and I are really excited about the Myanmar part of our plans.Hope to spend 3-4 weeks there which probably won't be enough time to see everywhere properly, but hopefully we'll get a nice enough taste to want to go back.

Thanks Shimla.I know this question should go to the Visa thread but was wondering if you know if it's easy enough to get our Indian visas in Yangon.Don't sweat it if you're not sure as I haven't tried to research it myself yet, just thought you might off-hand.

hi dino!
in response to your visa inquiry.... Get in in bangkok!! I'm sure that it is technically possible here in yangon, but the time and stress involved in getting it would definitely not be worth it considering all the travelling you'll want to do in your short time here. I applied for a student visa here THREE MONTHS ago, and i'm still waiting..... Of course the student visa is more complicated than a travel visa, but I've come across enough fed-up travellers in the waiting room (yes, i've spent a LOT of time there!) to know that it's not the speediest of processes. Have a fantastic time in Myanmar - it really is the most spectacuar place i've been. And remember to bring US dollars - no plastic or travellers cheques - dollars dollars dollars!! Good luck with your flights and visas, and happy travelling.... Starfish ![]() |

Thanks starfish.
Your info sort of confirms what my instincts are saying, but it's fantastic to hear from people who've 'been there, done that'.It's no big deal getting our Indian visa before we get to Myanmar if we have to and thanks for reinforcing the cash message. We'd read you need lot's of cash and that credit cards are pretty useless,so it's very useful to hear that that advice is still current. Thanks again and happy travelling to you too. |

Dino,
I've found out from the Indian Embassy here that they do issue an Indian tourist visa valid for six months to an Australian National. The visa is given in four working days of application and requires you to submit your passport, two copies of the passport, two PP size photographs, the application form and of course the visa fee which is a steep US$65/- per head. |

Shimla,
Thankyou very much and hope you haven't had to go to too much trouble.Given that the visa's are valid for six months I think we'll get them here in Oz before leaving as I'm sure they are much cheaper than that here (hope so anyway).I can't remember how much from last time. Anyway, can I shout you a beer or coffee when we're in Yangon to say thanks properly? |
