Hi Fee

You will get the cheapest flight to Bangkok from Calcutta, I'm not sure of the price for a single, maybe Rs8000, hopefully other members have a better idea of the price.

The area around Krabi, Au Nang, Phuket and Phi Phi have many places to do a scuba diving course.

When the course is finnished go to Ko Lanta, you can get ferries from Krabi or Phi Phi, Ko Lanta is not as touristy as the other places, though it's quickly catching up.

Just a thought, the monsoon will be starting in southern Thailand soon, I'm not sure of the dates.

hi fee,

if its raining at the westcoast in thailand, hop over to the eastcoast.
the monsoon that infects the westcoast normaly doesnt infect the eastcoast. ko tao is a good place to do a scuba dive cours. but the landscape and everything is more beautiful at krabi and ko phi phi at the west imho.
have fun

Hi I posted the below on another similar question
On the diving issue, when the monsoon arrives the water clouds aand visibility is reduced greatly
There is also a huge amount of rubbish (more plastic bottles than you'd ever believe) gets washed up on the shores of the western side islands, something to do with direction of the winds etc.

Ko Tao on the eastern side of Thailand, the third island in the chain that contains Samui and Phan Ghan is the cheapest place to dive in SEA other than Pualo Wei at the northern extremity of Sumatra.

The waters are better on the western side of Thailand but not during the monsoon.

Anyway, here is the post I spoke of above...

Its definetly cheaper from Calcutta
I've flown to both Hong Kong and Bangkok from there and saved a lot.

As far as I remember Druk Air are the cheapest but have limited departure days. They use propeller Fokker planes which opens up a whole host of jokes ...such as what a fokker of a plane ...this is a fokker of a flight etc etc

we flew with Indian Airlines for around 6500 Rups i think

When arriving in BKK you can share a taxi or take the aircon bus for 100 Baht which willd rop you at all the main hotel locations and is hassle free
The stop is right at the taxi rank outside arrivals and you buy tickets there

You can also do the cheapo route which I like as Im Scottish hahaha

Take the train ...you walk over a walkway over the road ...its marked in arrivals
It cost 10Baht to the central station...about 20-30 minutes then outside the train station take a left round the corner ...ask tourist info where it is ...they also do great free maps
The take the number 57 bus to Banglamphu ...for 2Bhat I think
The conductor will know where you want ..(ask for Koh Sarn rd and they'll tell you when to get off

Good luck
Oh I should say ....Calcutta is an amazing city
try and stay a few days there it wont dissapoint
The salvationa rmy on Sudder street is great but book ahead

All the best
Bryan

I found this on thai air website http://www.thaiair.com/

Class Economy Restricted
Thai Airways Intl
TG 317 Bangkok Int'l (BKK), Bangkok, Thailand 18:15
Bombay (BOM), Mumbai (Bombay), India 21:00 Non-stop 333 4h15min Economy Restricted
12 Mar Thai Airways Intl
TG 318
Bombay (BOM), Mumbai (Bombay), India 22:40
Bangkok Int'l (BKK), Bangkok, Thailand 04:30 + 1 day(s) Non-stop 333 4h20min Economy Restricted

Itinerary pricing
Fare Type Fare Tax Baht (Thailand) Dollars (U.S.)
Negotiated 15930.00 (389.81) + 615.00 (15.05) x 2 Adult = 33090.00 ›US$809.71 for two people and
Total fare = 33090.00 809.71
Last day to ticket: Monday, 24 May 2004
15930.00 ($389.91) for one person
Now I know that is from BBK to India but I am sure it works the other way. I called Thai air way here in the states and they said that those are web special that can only be bought via the web and that if the fare does not have an E next to it (meaning it can be ticketed electronically) you must pick up the ticket 72 hours after booking. If that same ticket was bought here it would be double the price. So instead of $389.91(current exchange rate) (it would be I think she said) around $700+.
so try a cyber cafe as usually the fares are a bit cheaper online.
