Fixation on foreign policy

I wonder how many more Pakistan posts I will be allowed before i am kicked out of Indiamike

anyways, for those who are interested in learning more about Pakistan here is a good article i came across while there and then found on the Net:

Fixation on foreign policy

Pakistan does seem to be in the centre of major storms sweeping the world today... no wonder Pakistanis seem to be more informed and concerned with what is happening in the world than say Europeans are (IMHO). here is my fav quote from the article:
Quote:
How Pakistan will handle itself in the exceptionally turbulent world of the first few years of the 21st century is a subject of great interest to the ordinary shopkeeper; the ordinary taxi-driver; the porter in a hotel or at the airport; the people who bring in tea and samosas to the visitors to the drawing rooms. The masses are as occupied with foreign policy issues as are the elite and the literates.
That is so true; as one author put it, small talk does not exist in Pakistan on the bus, in the chai shop, you tend to discuss big picture things always.

Daily newspaper Dawn (www.dawn.com) is a good source of some serious Pak news and analyisis, as is The Friday Times (www.thefridaytimes.com), the weekly newspaper.

They are concerned because so many of the worlds major issues are wrapped up in Pakistan and have been for years.
A step in the wrong direction and it could all blow up in their face!!
They were I feel lucky to have escaped the same fate as their neighbours the Afghanis. (not that I agree with the invasion but the circumstances were very similar)
Only some pretty impressive political two stepping absolved them from being next on the list of countries hosting international terrorism
And though the Indian goverment has been the more intransigent latel,y over the years various Pakastani goverment have undoubtably fueled the Kashmir problem to garner popular support for their particular style of goverment.
Add to that the internal pressures of Pakistani political life plus the in fighting amongst different islamic factions and you have a pretty shaky way of life.
Little wonder the world situation pertaining to Pakistan is on everyones lips.
I wish Musharraf well so far he's kept one step ahead of the pack, a difficult job in the circumstances, he has to try and be all things to all people with so many parties just waiting to shoot him down in flames!!

You know, I wished the BJP learned from what happened/is happening from Pakistan. You can't play with edged tools without cutting your hands. Using religion to wind up people starts an unstoppable slow moving tragedy spread over decades. The politics of hate ends up sometimes in ridicoulousness where both India & Pakistan trade blows over nothing e.g. Siachen Glacier.

In the crapola of life, somebody shoots you for believing in a different non-existent entity.

In my travels in India and eslewhere, I have found the locals far more interested and engaged in international affairs than the average American. Americans don't care much for anything beyond their shores (the New York city newscasts don't even tell you the temperature in Toronto), and we have very little political imagination (as is evidenced by the current presidential campaign). Democracy in South Asia (including Pakistan) is a far more complicated and messy affair than it is in the US, with a lot more at stake. We don't do ideas very well in the US--that's for Europeans and Asians. We vote our pocketbooks, not our minds.

Crossing the Border

Moving on? Talk about countries that surround India. Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Tibet, etc...
