Dhaka-Kolkata Train from Apr 14

(The Daily Star Dhaka, Mar 10,2007)

Dhaka-Kolkata train service from Apr 14
Pallab Bhattacharya, New Delhi

India and Bangladesh have decided to launch a train service between Kolkata and Dhaka on April 14, marking first rail link between the two neighbours.

The agreement to launch the service on Bangla New Year's Day was taken at a three-day meeting of

India-Bangladesh Intergovernmental Committee of Railways, which concluded here yesterday, official sources said.

As per the agreement, each country will run the train for six months, they said.
The two countries now have two bus services between Kolkata and Dhaka and between Agartala and Dhaka.

This is great news, especially after the Samjhauta Express blast.

But what route will it be going? I was under the impression that there was no direct railway from Dhaka to western Bangladesh?

This train will be a daily train, running from Chitpur (near Sealdah) to Joydevpur (near Dhaka), the line will run all the way to Dhaka from November.

The train will be fully reserved, and will also have Air Con carriages, it will be a daytime train.

WB and Bangladesh share a common border, no other Indian states between them

Assam and WB have a common state border well north of Bdesh.
Most of assam is east of BD, and most of wb is west of it... so, never the twain shall meet
