Is it possible to get to the Tanakpur/Mahendranagar border crossing from Agra? We're landing in Delhi prior to a trip in Nepal, but we're quite keen to get the Taj Mahal in at the start of our trip. Looking at the train maps there appears to be a 'metre guage' railway that runs from a station near to Agra and up to Pilibhit - does anyone know if this is a useable route?
Thanks

There is the 5316 Gokul Express from Kasganj (about 50 km from Agra). You cud take that train, only it arrives in Pilibhit at 22.15, which means you'd have to stay the night there. I've passed thru it twice long ago, it was a bit of a dump then. I doubt there are salubrious accom options available even now.
Even if you find transport to Khatima or Banbasa that late (you don't need to go to Tanakpur, that wud require a back-track to Banbasa to cross the border), I'm not aware of great accom options there either. FYI, the crossing is closed at night, so you can't go to Mahendranagar either.
There is a train from Pilibhit to Banbasa at 7 am next morning, but again you have the matter of staying in Pilibhit overnight.

BUT
You're in luck - have I found the ideal train for you!
Ok, still from Kasganj, but a much better departure time - it's the 5311 Kumaon Express to Lalkuan, dep 9.40 am. What you do is get off at Kichha (arr 14.31), from where you will get a bus - most likely to Banbasa, but if not then certainly to Khatima, from where it's a short hop to the border, plenty of transport options. The major benefit is that you can cross over to Mahendranagar same day (altho you'd probably have to stay overnight there, no idea about onward transport).

So much for trains - you cud also take a bus from Agra to Bareilly or Pilibhit, but I wudn't advise this unless you can find out locally that there are deluxe buses, the roads in that area are not the greatest. From Bareilly or Pilibhit you will get buses to Khatima and/or Banbasa.

Banbassa to Mahendranagar crossing

Hello everyone ,

I am indeed happy and thankful to be member of this forum.
I have to cross Indian border from Banbassa to Mahendranagar with my American friend who needs to do this to fulfil the conditions of multiple entry visa for India. We will be arriving by train to Bareilly on 6th(april) evening at about 8.30pm.

I have the following points for which need your suggestions.

(1) Is it safe to take night bus to Banbassa from Bareilly so as to reach there in the midnight.I talked over phone with Thanedar of Banbassa about hotel accommodation there. He replied that he was just posted there and not much familier with the place and told that due to MELA of PURNAGIRI shrine in Tanakpur , the hotels might be fully occupied.Do you think Khatima could be an option or we should spend night in Bareilly.
(2) Is it possible to return from Nepal custom and imigration the same day just after few hours for getting back to Banbassa ?

(3) any ideas about number of hotels in Banbassa or khatima?

Thanks ,
Kaushik

hi Kaushik !

Purnagiri Fair is a big fair of Terai region and there is a huge rush of devotees here during the mela days. Since you are arriving late at Bareilly, better to stay there. Hotel Swarn Tower or Pancham Continental are good hotels, both are close to railway station.

Don't forget to visit Kipps Restaurent in Bareilly.

Hi Dilhiwala,

Thanks for your valuable information and suggestion.

It is a good idea to spend night in Bareilly in a hotel close to train station. From the satellite map it seems that Banbassa is located very close or inside the Dudhwa tiger reserve. In the night if we fail to get hotel accommodation it could be tough to spend night without proper place!

Do you have any idea about possibility of returning to Banbassa the same evening if we cross the border in morning hours ? Our object to visit Nepal is just to validate multiple entry visa to India.
We need to go to Almora from Banbassa and it seems from the map that there is no need to return to Bareilly but to head straight to Rudrapur from Khatima.Do you think there is bus service on this route?

The Best Regards ,
Kaushik

Why not ! Go to Mahendranagar...have a cup of coffee and come back. Earlier it was popular for imported items (now we get enough in India)

Yes ! The route is Khatima-Sitraganj-Kichcha-Rudrapur.

I remember we used a state Govt. bus Tanakpur-Haridwar to come to Rudrapur from Banbassa. When you are there you may check whether it's still running.

Hi Delhiwala ,

You have indeed valuable information.I have read somewhere in a post in this forum that it is mendatory to stay atleast one day in Mahendranagar before you retun to India , otherwise the imigration dept in Nepal does not approve check out entry ! nor the Indian imigration dept allow entry ! Will be thankful if you have real information.

Oh !! As an Indian, I didn't need any visa or stamping while going to Mahendranagar. Hence I shouldn't have commented on this....

Banbasa is a long way from Dudhwa.

Just ask immigration.

Rudrapur is off-route as well. Just ask for a bus heading for Haldwani, there'll be quite a few.
Or if you're feeling adventurous and want to cut across the hills, head for Champavat or Lohaghat, from where you'll get transport for Almora.
