delhi to beijing (anyone from philly/detroit area?)

hey. i've just started looking into a trip to india and still have a LOT of research to do, but i'd like to go sometime next summer/fall. i would like to go to the olympics in august, so i was thinking of maybe doing a trip to india before or after that. like i said, i haven't looked too much into it, so i don't know how the logistics would work out, but i was thinking of taking the train from india to china... if i were to go before the olympics, it'd be something like delhi > kathmandu > lhasa > beijing.

i want to reiterate, i am JUST starting to look into this, so if anyone has ANY advice, suggestions, etc whatsoever, let me know! i would most definitely love to talk to someone about this trip!!

hope to hear from you!!

ps. if you're from the philly/detroit area, even better!

For starters, what's your time frame for this trip plan/idea?

I have friends who did something similar this past year as part of an around the world trip.

They flew from Delhi to Bejing--not their plan but they forgot to get Visas for India and were turned away when they landed from South Africa in Delhi--yup, no amount of pleading and begging helped and it was off to China ! So they reversed their trip and flew to Tibet then went overland to Nepal and then into India for a few months. They had alot of time and had a fantastic experience. Overland is slow and I don't know about trains. But you are doing research, so you can find out.

I've been researching a similar trip, all overland, hopefully for next spring. Depending on how things are looking jobwise, we might even go further, to Mongolia, and who knows...

Since you ask for advice, etc., I'll give you the quick run-down of what I've learned:

Based on LP India, LP Nepal, and Kym McConnell's Tibet Overland, the short scoop is: it seems it should be possible, and actually not that difficult to arrange. But as noted above: it's sure to be time-consuming.

I'm assuming that travel within India is not the question. There are essentially three legs: Delhi to Kathmandu (via whichever route), Kathmandu to Lhasa, and Lhasa to Beijing. Everything I've read says that getting to Kathmandu is not especially difficult, and the new train from Lhasa to Beijing means you could jump on in Tibet and end up in north China three days later, all without leaving the ground, though I can recommend stopping off in Xi'an to see the ancient sights.

There's also air service from Lhasa, if you want to travel the bird road.

Getting into Tibet is, I understand, a bit tricky because of the permit requirements. It seems that one must go through a travel agent for this. However, I've been told by experienced travelers that there are many agents in Kathmandu who will be glad to take your money ... er... provide this service, and you just need to get to Kathmandu and look around.

If you do this trip, I for one would love to read anything you'd care to write up about it.
