Delhi- Hong Kong
Hi people,
My friend and I want to travel from Delhi to Hong Kong. We want to stay in the North of India and cross the border at the most east point of India...to come in China. We have three months time. Are there people who have make the same trip? it would be very nice if we get some tips and suggestions.... Thank you all, and all the best! Sikkim
Travel to the east Indian state of Sikkim.
The Nathu la pass has recently been opened for crossing into China. From there you cud travel on the newly started Tibet railway that connects with mainland China. Check with the Cinese embassy in Delhi beforehand. |

The only 2 ways overland are via Pakistan or Nepal/Tibet, I know the Pakistan route is closed for about 6 months a year, and the Tibet route would be difficult (if not closed) for about 6 months a year.

... Another 2 cents, I had heard about these recent developments along Chinese border (promising!) but was wondering about foreigners yes. Might take quite a while for things to get stabilized further. I thought I read something just recently about relations actually not going all that well.
A friend of mine did it via Pakistan but from her stories it's a frikking long ride to pass over Tibet (literally weeks if I recall, or perhaps she meant more than a week at least) in clanky buses and whatnot. She didn't have a very good time the way I remember (never mentioning illness and robbery and hospitalization that could arguably happen anywhere). I'm not saying it's impossible, just it would take some thorough research. (Some of) the area of China to the south at least that you'd be headed for (I forget the name, SE Asia area roughly) has also long been tricky for foreigners, friends of mine have been kicked out there (other people do seem to make it. It's something people trying to make it there from Thailand'ish run into, if it's still like that.) It's another thing you might want to look into. Once you're in, Hongkong should be reachable alright. Try also http://www.seat61.com/China.htm but it has no info on this particular route. There's stuff on Lhasa at http://www.seat61.com/Nepal.htm#Kath... sa%20by%20bus but it doesn't tell you what the journey after that would be like. Ah look here it is http://www.seat61.com/China.htm#Lhasa%20&%20Tibet , Lhasa-Beijing would then be just 3 days. Note also: "A train Guangzhou (near Hong Kong) to Lhasa is due to start on 1 October 2006, and a train from Shanghai may be introduced later." Since you're in Holland, try contacting Koning Aap or some such outfit (Djoser etc.) about it. You don't need to join up with their tours but they should be helpful (I hope). There's a great travel bookstore called Amber in Amsterdam (Da Costastraat if they haven't moved), very knowledgable people and the place functions as a semi-library. Pied a Terre (Singel) is another such place.

nb Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree Forum North-East Asia Branch might be helpful. I can never really find my way there but see what you come up with.

I'm not all that fond of people copying Google Earth pics, but anyway here's an idea of the terrain you're looking at: The not so open Nathu La crossing from Sikkim to Tibet. Kindly posted by member Vistet just now. Note the height numbers too
