Darjeeling to Kathmandu 2009 update needed!

Hi Guys,

Ive seen countless posts here on how to get to Darjeeling to Kathmandu, many are a few years old now and im also hearing reports that its getting harder for travellers to cross the border for Nepal.

Would really appeciate some updated advice on how to get to Darjeeling to Kathmandu, prices, which border etc. I am heading to Darjeeling late May and looking to leave for Kathmandu around 31st May. I have a flight to catch back to the UK on 13th June!

Thanks in advance.

I'm going to delhi in Sept and travelling up to Kathmandu. Will be in Nepal until Feb 10. I'm going to be in the east of Nepal and was wondering how easy it would be to get into to Darjeeling from there. My plans are all still a bit sketchy! When you going?

hey i cant say much more than more previous post here

i did the trip 25th december 2008. Then u had two choices:

Leaving kakrabitta in the morning a bus to koshi river, a dangerous boat ride and then another bus to kathmandu. Once u cross the river there is really no knowing when buses will leave they just wait till they are full to the roof. It was really shit and i would not advise. The koshi dam broke last year and thousands of people died, the dam was sposed to be maintained by india but wasnt. Going through the area that was wiped out and everyone living in tent.

The other option is leaving kakrabitta after midday an going on one bus via india which can potentially take longer...maybe i dont know.

You can fly, i think its about an hour.

My advice would be if you dont have much time dont travel so far, you will waste two days on buses and then more days recovering.

hope this helps

theres also an information centre at kakarabitta, they were really helpful and the only real source of information in town.

Thanks for the info mate. Think I will bear this in mind and wait until I get to Darjeeling and see what the situation is and decide from there. Ive left myself 12 days from Darjeeling to Kathmandu which should be enough time if I have have to end up flying.

We will see!

Well from baghdogra airport there is buddha airline s if i remember correctly and they operate on daily basis this was in june 2005 !! About crossing border i being of indian nationality there was nt much problem just was to fill up a form and deatil s purpose of visit, it was just to take a quick trip around the small village where they were selling cheap nepali bag s slipper s deo s which did nt appeal me at all, and yes kathmandu was like 400 odd km s far from there a whole day s bus ride !!
but flying seem s the best option the view must be totally worth it
Regards
Saajan

1. best overland border crossing from Darjeeling to Nepal
2. are there any buses straight to Pokhara rather than stopping off in Kathmandu?
also we are PIO should we still have to pay $30 each? last time we eneterd through different border and were made to pay this but Indians did not?

Got in Nepal on my motorcycle crossing over the Pashupati Border crossing. This place is just 30 kms from Darjeeling on way to Mirik.

Took me two days to get to Kathmandu from Darjeeling staying over Lahan. Lahan is 260 kms from Darjeeling and 400 kms from Kathmandu via the long loop route.

Can cross over koshi river now overland on landfill of soft soil as in...

The damaged road...

A land fill of soft soil to get across!!

Heavy vehicles take a different land fill track...

Have to wait for my right of way...
