Darjeeling to Bhutan

Hi Everyone,
Just planning my next trip to the Himalayas and was pondering spending a week in Bhutan. Does anyone know whether it's possible (or advisable) to go straight from Darjeeling to Thimpu? I know you can fly there from Calcutta...but it would be nice to be able to get there overland. Thoughts?

Unless there have been recent changes in policy, tourism to Bhutan is pretty tightly controlled with entry granted only to groups or individuals with organized, pre-paid arrangements.

Just curious Millreef if you followed up on this and found out anything. I would be interested to know the exact details and if there is more than one way to visit without going on a group tour.
Each year I keep saying "this will be the one I go to Bhutan" and still haven't made it yet.

Are you going to bring your hair stylist along again?

Hi Mike,

No, I didn't follow up on the details of getting to Bhutan. I checked with my fellow travellers and the consensus was that, given the time constraints, they'd prefer to do some trekking around Darjeeling instead. However, I do have some contacts in Darjeeling who might know the answer...will drop them a line and let you know.

This year I'll be going with a yoga instructor....so even though my folicles won't be quite as pristine, I can be much more flexible about having occasional bad hair!
