Crossing into Sri Lanka with intention of attaining new Indian tourist visa

Have posted similar request for feedback on 'Visa' thread but might pay to put something here too:

I am thinking of crossing into Sri Lanka with intention of attaining new Indian tourist visa. Has anyone done so lately? I will arrive in Sri Lanka just before my 6 months Indian visa expires and spend a couple of weeks in Sri Lanka looking about and applying for a new Indian tourist visa. I only really want an extra month in India to fill in the gap between when my first visa will expire and when my flight leaves Mumbai (wouldn't dare overstay - way too sensible for that)

Would love to hear from anyone that's done this recently. Am a little concerned about the political state of Sri Lanka as it has experienced heightened unrest lately and it's always tough to know just how many grains of salt I should take the international media with....

Would really appreciate any first hand, recent Sri Lanka experiences.
