Crossing borders: Tibet, Nepal, and India
I am so excited to have found this forum! What a wealth of knowledge. Right now I am living and working in Yunnan, China- this summer my husband and I are planning an overland trip from Tibet into Nepal into the NE Indian states. Then we would like to fly to Myanmar.
Does anyone have any suggestions for border crossing from Eastern Nepal into the NE Indian states? Also any suggestions on the safest airports/safest airlines to fly from NE India to Yangoon? (My husband is a bit nervous to fly, but overland is not an option) Thank you in advance to anyone who responds! Have joy |

Once you cross the Tibetian border into Nepal, you can go to the Kakkarbhita Border to get into India near the North Eastern states or the Sonauli Border to get into the Northern Indian states like Uttar Pradesh. Getting on to Myanmar maybe a bit difficult from India. You may have to go to Bangkok to fly there unless you take the land route via Nagaland as I am not sure if there is any airline operating from India to Myanmar. Also you will have a problem to get into the North Eastern states without a permit.
Cheers, Aadil.

I'm not sure about today, but until recently at least Myanmar had no open land borders except to Thailand, and even the latter seemed to be subject to the mood of the day.

I had recently heard of Indians crossing over from there (now was it done illegally?!!!) and also getting into Myanmar by the land route. Also there was some talk about a highway being built in the region so I guess it must be opening up slowly!!!

I heard of that highway, yes. Wouldn't hold your hopes up any time soon, but who knows.
It's possible there are different regulations for the nationalities directly involved, of course. Crossing over from anywhere in the NE for non-Indians was never easy, but there have been mixed reports on it here, to Bangladesh, that is. I just don't know; it used to be mostly a matter of getting lucky with the official in charge, apparently. |

Yes, I guess it all depends on what conversation you have with the official in charge at that time. Sometimes you may get lucky, I suppose.
