It's a metalled road, that's what the report in the paper says. & it's up to Everest Base Camp only. Whatever it is it's really bad & everyone should raise their voice.

Now business mans will harvest in that area to build temporary hotels or restaurants at the season time. What are these people doing to the ecology ?? One day nature will return the ultimate and that day anybody will have no power to protest against her .
Yes, we need more commercial activity

Raising our voices will, unfortunately, achieve nothing. Is Tibet free yet?

Today's news that China has now overtaken the United States as the world's biggest polluter should cause more concern, but there is nothing to be gained by protesting over that either. China will continue to pursue its own path, and ignore the protests from the rest of the world.

any country that wants trade relations with China are China's lap dogs. Australia's politicians just went through the song and dance of whether to cave in to China regarding the Dalai Lama's recent visit.

Unfortunately, that's the reality of the world we live in. Look at how the British Prime Minister himself recently ordered the abandonment of an major corruption investigation on the grounds that it would embarrass Saudi Arabia. International politics is a very dirty game, and the only thing that matters is business.

The rough road already exists upto EBC on the north side it is only being metalled now. This will make the journey much better, leading to more people visiting the area and thus causing much more damage to the environment of the region, which is of concern.
However, do we think of all these issues when we are planning our trips to the Himalaya.
What has been the result of closing Nanda Devi park to a generation of trekkers?

Somehow this does not make any sense to me. Most people climb up from the south side (Nepalese) side of the mountain as the North route (from the Chinese/Tibeten side) is more difficult.

If it weren't for the altitude I could make it up to EBC and keep silent on whether I had trekked it..

Oh, sh**!! There goes the neighborhood.

"I wish there is a global move to Boycott China Olympics .. if they go ahead with this road to Everest."

I second the boycott.

Bad, bad! . The steady stream of so-called professional and amateur climbers have already succeeded in making Everest the highest waste dump in the world. Busloads of casual tourists will add to the fun.

Aargh!

Well, the Chinese minister for culture has defended building road to EBC to make travel easy (TOI, June 21), but it is a moral hazard issue.

It is difficult to work out a trade-off between environmental issues and developmental issues to the satisfaction of all concerned. More often than not, it is the protagonists of development who finally score over the environmentalists in all such issues.

I understand that there is proposals to extend the motorable road from Hanumanchetty to Janakichetty to reduce the walking distance to Yamunotri from 13 kms to 6 kms. Similar proposal is also on the offing for extending the motorable road from Gaurikund to Rambara to reduce the walking distance to Kedarnath from 14 kms to about 7 kms .

I am sure our authorities will use the same trump card as Chinese in saying that they wish to make pilgrims comfortable while visiting these shrines .

I will also not be surprised of Chinese bringing the issue of equalities by saying that construction of road to ECB will lead to breaking the monopoly of few trekkers and mountaineers .

From South Col it is a little bit easy (may be this word "easy" should not be used) to make the summit. So Nepal is popular to the climbers. But there involves a journey upto Lukla in aircraft which is a burden. Now more activity will be done through the north side to overcome that burden and Nepal will be sufferer, coz. every year Nepal earns dollars through the expedition permits & etc. China is a 93.79%(supposed to be) developed country, still they are harming Nepal's economy only for showing there creativity or power.
