It seems the Kakkarbhitta border will be closest to you from Kolkata but you could also go via the Sonauli border from Gorakhpur if you take a train from Kolkata to Gorakhpur directly. There is a flight from Kolkata to Kathmandu too, if you wish to fly.

Cheers,
Aadil.

I think the most convenient would be to take the Mithila Express (3021)
from Kolkata to Raxaul at the border and then take the bus to Kathmandu.

take an overnight train like darjeeling mail/kanchankanya/teesta-torsa from kolkata for new jalpaiguri.
from the station you will get shared jeeps to kakarbhitta border (about 1.5 hrs).
take bus from kakarbhitta to kathmandu.

Raxaul to Birnagar of Nepal then by bus to Kathmandu. There is flight to Kathmandu from Birnagar also (approx. fare Rs.1200/=)and takes 30-40 minutes.Bus takes approx. 10 hrs. to reach Kathmandu.

Raxaul is vry close to Birgunj, on the other side of the border in Nepal - there is no need to head east to Biratnagar, as you need to be heading north to Ktm. (I am assuming you mean Biratnagar, Tasuray?) Anyway there are flights from Simra (15 20 minutes!!)near Birgunj. Birgunj is much nearer to Ktm than Biratnagar and even more so from Kararvhitta. Hope this ramble is clear!

Birgunj

Thank you, Cool Blue. I want to mean Birgunj not Biratnagar.

umm, is that really a convenient variant?
the bus from kararbhitta to kathmandu takes 17h (plus the 1.5h jeep ride from jalpaiguri) compared with 8h from raxaul/birganj to ktm.
of course outside the monsoon time it could be a very scenic ride I assume, but now its probably cloudy almost all the time.
is there any other advantage with the kakarbhitta route?

Other than flying, the Calcutta-Raxaul-Birganj-Kathmandu route mentioned by many above is the best and fastest way!

having spent 5 years in Kathmandu I would surely agree with Ananda that Calcutta-Raxaul-Birjunj-Kathmandu wud be the shortest, cheapest and fastest possible route for u guys.

As far as the scenery is concerned, u wont miss it as there is only one highway that goes to kathmandu so whichever border u come from u eventually take the same route to reach kathmandu. last 3 hours would be amazing as i have always felt so... i used to travel by bus plenty of times as i didnt want to miss that scenic beauty...

have a nice journey n lemme know if u need any other information regarding anything in kathmandu... would be happy to write....
