Budget hotel in Negombo

Hi,

I arrive in Colombo at 11pm tomorrow night (16 Jan). We want to find basic (cheap) accommodation in Negombo for one night before heading to Hikkaduwa. Anyone got any suggestions? Ideally we don't want to spend more than 5-10 pounds per night per room, but I don't know if this is realistic or not. Any advice would be welcome.

Cheers

Budget accom in Sri Lanka

Thank you Sandhya,

Completely under-researched and unprepared, including no local currency between three of us, we arrived at the airport at 10.30 pm, went to one of the booths at the exit and got a room for about $10 US at the Silver Sands Hotel. It was double what we wanted to pay, but it served its purpose for the night before we headed down to Hikkaduwa. There we stayed in a lovely small guesthouse called Sweden In (sic), in Narigama -- just south of Hikkaduwa -- for only 600 rupees a night. It's all new because this area was destroyed by the 2004 Tsunami, so the rooms are lovely -- as are the family who run it. It's across the road from the beach, which makes it more affordable than those on the beach, like Neela's, which is opposite and great for food and entertaining staff (think of a comedian version of Tic Tac from James Bond). A good crowd of regulars hang out at Neela's because of the good food and atmosphere. The rooms are lovely if you can afford them.
