My impression is passenger boat travel in those parts isn't all that easy anyway, save for some expensive charter or freighter deals.
If you know anything more about it, please fill us in.

Whatever it is it won't be as cheap as overland unless its truely hairy like catching a smuggler's dhow. Best idea give Pak a few days to cool down and travel through Wagah. I wouldn't hang around for the "elections"..

There are, to my knowledge, no scheduled passenger services between India and those countries.
On freighters, generally speaking, such travel has reduced to virtually nil worldwide post the WTC attacks and consequent new international (and ridiculous) security regulations. You may have a very slim chance if you approach shipping companies directly in Mumbai- those which have their own ships plying to the Persian Gulf. It will be a very slim chance, however. |

Whenever I've seen this question asked on the Thorn Tree (a lot!), the reply has always been negative.
I wonder though, would Dubai be a more realistic destination? Just a thought.... Last edited by machadinha : Jan 8th, 2008 at 00:09. Reason: merged posts |

Hey, me and my girlfriend are also interested in this question, the Pakistan situation doesn't look very well and we'll go West from India, so we're trying to find some interesting way
We'll go from Madrid to Japan on the transiberian, then China to Singapur, then flight from India and from there we wanted to go to Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, etc... We've been checking and there are 6 options 1.- Crossing Pakistan 2.- Going from India to Nepal, then China (Tibet...) and try to cross Tayik-Uzbek-Turkmen-istan 3.- Same than 2 but going to Kazakstan, then ferry to Azerbaijan and Iran 4.- Flying Mumbai - Tehran (400 euro) 5.- Find some private yacht in India going to anywhere and, from anywhere, continue the way 6.- Flying Delhi - Madrid (300 euro) It seems there are not too many options for leaving India ![]() |

Just that private yacht you'd have to get very very lucky I guess, as outlined above.ps From all I've read going over the Karakoram Highway and into Central Asia should be pretty straightforward still, I think. Could get complicated in winter or during monsoons, I'm not sure. Others will know. Going over Nepal-Tibet and into China can be a real hassle, I hear (but I may be wrong), unless that's where you wanted to go anyway. Try http://www.seat61.com/China.htm for some pointers. Check their http://www.seat61.com/Pakistan.htm while you're at it. |

The current situation aside, India-Pakistan-Iran used to be a standard route I think (?)
Maybe Conor can advise, or check the links in his signature, he's posted above (#7). Check also http://www.indiamike.com/india/cross...travel-t48696/ , not terribly informative I'm afraid. I came across this links page at Seat 61, see bottom for shipping links. It ain't much, but thought I'd leave it behind: http://www.seat61.com/Linkspage.htm. How up-to-date any of that is is anyone's guess; keep in mind the Capt.'s advice above on contemporary difficulties. |
