I have fallen in love with Bhutan...what more can i say.
Thought of starting this new thread for would be/newbie travelers looking for updates on Bhutan, be it new hotels, restaurants, road closure notices or something of interest.

Hopefully, fellow India Mikers would keep this thread running with updated tips on return from their travels.

@sego...the only way to escape the $250-300/day tariff is to look up Volunteer Opportunities.

The process is very simple and quick.
Visit the Immigration Office at Norzin Lam in the morning to the counter which extends validity as well as provides route extension.
I had an initial permit from Phuentsholing for Paro & Thimpu with a validity of 7 days. As I was planning to stay beyond 7 days and visit Punakha, I had to do two things.
1. Make an application, requesting extension of stay (permit Validity) for an addl period as desired giving reasons.
2. Fill up a single form for the entire family
3. Attach the original permit and hand over.
It was duly processed and endorsed by the counter officer and sent to Immigration-In-Charge for final approval.
I had the Original Permit duly endorsed with extended validity within 15 minutes.

Next was to apply for the route permit to visit Punakha and all other regions you intend (Bumthang/Phobjhika/Wangdue Phodrang) - ensure you state the districts you plan to visit or might want to travel and list them all.
Fill up the necessary restricted route permit form.
Attach a copy of your original permit (In my case, I had to take a fresh copy which had the validity extension)
Submit both and they get processed within 15-30 minutes.

You are issued a seperate document (route extension permit) giving the details of the areas you would be visiting...You would be showing this document at various check points enroute (they will stamp entry and exit & return/surrender it at the last check point)
Your regular permit will be surrendered at the last checkpost on the way back to Phuentsholing (it would have been the first check post on your way from Phuentsholing)

If you have an Indian Registered Vehicle, similar permit will have to be issued from RSTA office.

Hope this helps.
