I am keen to travel (in 2008) by the new train from Beijing to Lhasa ... with maybe 3-4 stop-overs in-between at nice scenic places .... and then from Lhasa to Kathmandu by Bus or Jeep.

Has anybody done such a trip? When is the best time to do this for best mountain scenery & views? How does one organize such a trip including Visas and Travel arrangements?

Will appreciate a detailed reply or Email-Id of any tour-agent who can provide this info and organize the tour.

Thanks in Advance - KS

I really haven't the foggiest but I suspect http://www.seat61.com/ should be your first port of call, at least for the train bit.

Good luck with it!

Can you say what threads you were pointing to? For some reason and regretfully IM search URL's don't stick, so they can't be used as permalinks. That is to say they won't produce anything after a short bit.

Click on 'search' (above), then click on 'Advanced search', then in the 'key words' section, insert 'Lhasa' and in the 'user name' section insert 'kailash35', then click 'search now'.

This will lead to 4 threads.

Sure ... i will.

In fact, I am thinking: Can I do this at end of my upcoming EBC trek in Sept-Oct-07 ... in the other way i.e. from Kathmandu go to Lhasa by bus/jeep and then catch the train to Beijing ... I wonder if I need to get China Visa from India or manage that in Kathmandu. Anyway research is on ... will keep this thread posted with any new info I gather.

My Nepal contact has replied about Kathamandu-Lhasa-Kathmandu pkg trip .... his answer (below) is not very clear ... but the web-link he sent gives a whole lot of information .... I need to still check out Lhasa to Beijing by Train option.

Minnesota ... thanks for the YouTube link ... I saw that video and got a pretty good idea of the scenery from that train!

BTW, on the same YouTube page, there are some 20 other "Related" Videos listed .... many of them are other videos of the Lhasa Train ....... hope you saw those too

Further .... on checking up about the Train option in the Kathmandu-Lhasa Package the reply I got:

**************
Dear Sir
you can do that you do first tour to Lhasa and from there you can go to china by train train ticket you get in China and to go to china you need another visa tibet visa doesn't work, and if you just og to Lhasa and want to go from there it is also possible but quite expensive too because kathamndu to Lhasa flight ticket is about us$300
***************

So what i understand from above is: Lhasa To and Fro can be done from Kathmandu, with some kind of "Tibet-Lhasa only" Visa ... but that is not good enough to go China, on Lhasa-Beijing Train.
