Amritsar to Lahore
Planning to visit Lahore during stay in Amritsar.
Should I leave first thing in the morning? Although the distance is not far, generally how long does it take to: 1. get to the border 2. cross the border 3. get into lahore from the border. Also, should I get my visa here in Rome or get it in Delhi? I believe it is probably easier in Rome... thanks for any and all help.. |

Did this last year. Best to get your visa in Rome.
The crossing into Pakistan took a few hours to do as there were Indian Cricket fans who were allowed to use the land route as opposed to crossing by rail. On the way back into India the crossing took less than an hour. You go to Immigration and then to Customs next you start the walk back towards the border and your passport details are registered by the Pakistani border forces. Next you cross the border and the Indians register your passport details finally you clear immigration and customs. |

I think the border opens for crossings at around 10am. I am sure you will be over in less than an hour if there is no rush. The actual walk is not too long. I found most my time on the journey to Pakistan was spent at the Indian immigration counter as there were close to 100 people in the queue trying to get to Pakistan to watch the cricket. The customs clearence was very quick.
The next hold up was at Pakistani immigration as they reckoned I was on a blacklist . The immigration officer invited me into the room where he was checking his computer, he then explained that I was blacklisted. I asked him to show me and he showed me the name on the monitor. Strangely his reasoning for me being blacklisted was because I share the same first three letters of my name with someone who is blacklisted. I pointed this out and then he come to his real intentions which was a backhander (he said he would get me through customs). I told him I had nothing to hide so customs could search my baggage. At this point he realised he would not get any cash out of me and sent me on my way.I am not sure if the Pakistani cricket fans are allowed to use the crossing by foot but if they are then there may be a slight rush on both sides of the border. I think the Pakistani side also opens at around 10am. There are places to eat and drink on both sides so even if you are early you can wait. Lahore is not very far from the crossing. The coolies on both sides can annoy you. Tell them firmly if you do not want them to carry your bags. |

Trust me you all people are making me burn into embers....
Reason being.... I want to drive and visit Pakistan on my two wheels but the only worst part is I m born in India where people openly curse me for telling them that how much desperately I want to go into pakistan territory and they tell me that im inviting death Why do we still see it as oppostion always! I am sure some of the indians wud rate me bad on this but Yes, I m still willing to do this once in my lifetime if the conditions get better. Y am I born here where we still live in 100 years old thots about border and cultural difference in larger loooms I am not a let me go ......... FreeBirD |

Would really like to cross the norder from Amritsar to Lahore too. Can a Pakistani visa be obtained anywhere else in India than Delhi, ie in Amritsar itself, or even Mumbai?
Anybody else done this trip? M |
