9am deadline for Bhutan?

Hi there,

Am I right in thinking there is a 9am deadline for getting into Bhutan for the day at Jaigon?

I was hoping to leave Darjeeling on day 1, then arrive in Jaigon and go to Bhutan, stay the night in Jaigon and leave on day 2. Can any help and let me know if this is possible?

Cheers

Elle

I don't think there is a 9am deadline. I did a short tour of Bhutan about 18 months ago, starting in Phuntsholing. We stayed in Jaigaon the night before, arriving there in the early afternoon. So we popped over the border to have our first look at the country in mid-afternoon and it was no problem, our visas were not valid till the following day but I think it would have been the same if we had no visa -- you can nip over whenever you like as long as you come back by 9pm or something like that. You can use Indian rupees in Bhutan but not the Rs500 notes which are illegal.

I toured Bhutan in March dis year on my motorbike, crossing the border at Phuentsholin. There is no 9 AM deadline as such. I entered the border around 10 AM.

Also I did use the Indian Rupee in Rs. 500 denomination. Indian rupee is freely accepted in Bhutan.

People may accept the Rs500 notes out of politeness but they are illegal, so to avoid offence it's best to make sure you have plenty of Rs100 notes.

Hmm.. cud be given the amount of fake currency floating around in 500 and 1000 rupee denominations... So i guess its better to exercise caution..

You can still visit for the day (Phuntsholing only), but I think for a time you were able to stay in Phuntsholing for one night without being on an official tour, but when we went that certainly wasn't in operation any more.
