| 14 days in Nepal Hi there, I am planning a few trips for next year and Nepal is top of the list. I will have 14-16 days free, so I am looking for advice from the font of IMers knowledge!! When is the best time to go? I would like to do some trekking, well, mostly trekking whilst I am there. What do you suggest - one of the big two, Annapurna base camp or Everest base camp? Or a path less travelled? Can anyone recommend a fabulous guide/trekking company? What kind of costs am I looking at? What else to see and do? Kathmandu? Pokhara? Royal Chitwan NP? Cheers, G1 |

| Account Closed | 14 - 16 days??? or am I gettting it wrong? I think you didn't check with the number of days needed for any big trek in Nepal. if you take your arrival - jelag- departure dates. you will need at least 20 days for any one of those big treks. Further I thin fo the firsttimers to Nepal yo should concentrate to normal Kathamandu, Bhaktapur, Pokhara, chitwan & some 2/3 days hikings in nearby Nagarkot , namaboudha etc. But if you want to do some real trek then just think of that trek. First check your time. |

| No, 14-16 days is what I said and what I meant! I shouldn't have any jetlag to contend with as I am based in Delhi. And I did check the trek times. I know I can't do longer ones as I won't have the time, but I am looking for something around 8-12days. My priority is trekking. And as such, the trek I choose to do will decide the city I fly into. I'm not bothered really about city-hopping. Sorry, should have been clearer in my OP. G1 |

| Everest base camp trek takes 3 weeks there and back! It's also not very unique and you end up as just a voyeur staring at the 'real climbers' if you know what I mean. I would head to Pokhara, there are many types of treks that originate there and vary in length. |

| Thank you. I think, after doing some research, that I am leaning towards flying into Pokhara. Seems there are more short treks available from there. |

| On the Road, wherever I am | If you can go during prime trekking season there is no reason not to trek. While some of the epic treks are out due to your timeframe, there are ways to get into the mountains. I don't feel as a first timer that you need to confine yourself to the valley. On my first trip I headed into the mountains for seven weeks. Flying in, as one poster mentioned, is an option. You could easily (weather permitting) fly into Jomsom and trek back to Pokhara . . . or start in Pokhara and head toward Jomsom, there is a a place about a week in that allows you to do a loop. I headed for Thorang La in February, was turned back by snow below Muktinath and just walked out the same way I came, with a slight detour. Didn't bother me to retrace my steps; seeing the Annapurnas twice, Dhalugiri twice was spectacular.

Day 1 : Bus/Taxi : Kathmandu to Dhunche. Day 2 : Trek : Dhunche to Syabru. Day 3 : Trek : Syabru to Lama Hotel trek Day 4 : Trek : Lama Hotel to Langtang village. Day 5 : Trek : Langtang village to Kyanjin Gompa. Day 6 : Rest : Kyanjin Gompa, visit surrounding area. Day 7 : Trek : Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel. Day 8 : Trek : Lama Hotel to Syabru. Day 9 : Trek : Syabru to Dhunche. Day 10: Bus/Taxi : Dhunche to Kathmandu. Unfortunately, due to time contraints you will not be able to go via Gosainkund and Laurebina pass and descend down the Helambu valley to Kathmandu but the Langtang valley is very beautiful. You get great views of Langtang Lirung and a walk up the valley from Kyanjin Gompa on your rest day gives some more spectacular views. Enjoy. | |
