Checkout one of these tailors, ask them to show you some sample work and test your waters before you decide to spend big bucks on a beautiful dress.

P.S: None of the tailors in Chennai will know anything about prom dress so if you can take a sample designs they will tell you if they can make one for you.

I'm sure Sahm is looking for a personal recommendation, not just a trade listing that she could have got from google.
Even with a recommendation, tailors seem to me to be notoriously unreliable in both quality and delivery, but at least knowing someone who has used them is a start.
I'm afraid that Mrs N's recent experience with a "high class" tailor in Egmore would not result in a recommendation; except to avoid

Bit one can start, and someone must have it, of experience of a tailor who can do western work, especially western formal work, rather than just salwars or even the more formal kind of sari blouse. That's a good basis.
When I first met her, the last tailor we went to assured me that she could do that work too, and the first things she made for Mrs N were good --- but then, no, I guess she had a more pushier, richer customer, or something, and on the basis of the poor subsequent work I wouldn't recommend her.

I don't know about chennai but i can reccomend a designer and stylist in delhi, who can make one (with measurements) and send it to you. Not perfect i iknow, but she makes excellent stuff and is used to sending stuff abroad for nri's and foreigners. She makes all of the ball gowns for the embassy staff and so on.
Company name "Studio Pride" in defence Colony delhi. Check the similar stories threads and you'll find more details. It might help if you cant find what you want in chennai!

Try Jay from the Fort St George Tailor in the Park Sheraton Chennai. Very westernised. PM me for his number or just pop in - personal recommendation as he does all my suits and I know he does womens wear - you'll need to check if he can do it.
If popping in, make sure you go to the right shop as there are several tailors in the arcade.

Thanks for the input. You're right, Nick, I was looking for a personal referral.
I think I've found one - we shall see. She's did a western-style party dress for my younger girl, so it's just a matter of different measurements. I hope. If she doesn't work out I'll try Ft. St. George (also my tailor, BTW); Delhi will be a last resort, although I appreciate the referral.
Thanks,

If she does work out, please pass on the referral

There's a shop in a mini-arcade in Tiruvanmiyur Mrs N is going to try next, but it really is a tough job finding and keeping a good tailor (the one my wife used for a long time has retired).

Hi there! I realise this thread was ages ago, but was wondering if u ever did manage to get a dress made. I have a wedding to attend and don't have time to go home (to canada) and pick one up before the big day. Any ideas on where I can get something suitable made or even ready made here in chennai??!
Currently, my wife has settled with Nishika's, which is next door to Modern Computers, on the East Coast Road, near the RTO. That's for sari blouses and salwars; she has no need for western dresses; I don't know if they do them.
