Woman alone in Chennai
My wife and I will be in Chennai from December 26 to 30th. I will be spending much of the time at a conference. I do not wish to cause any offence but this is our first time in India and I wish to ask if there are any problems for a western woman alone in Chennai during the day?
Would IMers be able to recommend some nice activities such as art gallery, botanical garden, ayurvedic massage or some tours or anything else. Much appreciated. |

No problems at all.
We have museums, if you are here on business and staying at a fairly posh hotel, they will probably have massage available. This is in the middle of Chennai's Music Season. Unless she finds that she hates it, she could spend all four days, early 'till late, watching Southern Indian classical music performances, and maybe some dance. Many of the performances would be free too. There are also hop-on hop-off tour buses, both for city tours and further afield. She could do a day out in Mahabalipuram, either that way, or with her own car-for-the-day. Kanchipuram, with its temples, is good for a day trip, and even Pondicherry can be done, with an early start. Oh... there's shopping too, of course... Shame she's only going to have four days! ![]() |

Hi
As Nick says, there is no problem for a western woman alone in Chennai. Besides carnatic music concerts, I would recommend an evening at a bharatanatyam (traditional south Indian dance form) concert. During the day, you could visit Dakshin Chitra- a place that showcases architecture of the southern states of India. Check out the following websites: http://www.dakshinachitra.net/ http://www.kutcheribuzz.com/events.asp |

I liked Dakshin Chitra. It's also a type of museum where they have recreated various types of ethnic houses of Southern Indian States...
