Will be moving to chennai!

Hi,

I'll be moving down to Chennai early next year for a new job. My plans are to work in the city for atleast 3 years, however, I've few questions to be answered.

1) Is the city really as conservative and dull for young people as my North Indian friends claimed?

2) What do the foreigners living there think about the city?

3) Is it possible to rent a house as a live-in couple in Chennai?

Thanx,

1) Probably, yes. But they tell me there are pubs now.

2) This one regrets the modernisation.

3) I think you'd have to pretend to be married. Coming from somewhere else, as a couple, people will assume that anyway, but people here are very inquisitive, so you might have to make up an agreed marriage story.

Nick, about your 3rd point, guess that's the same story here in Hyderabad as well or for any other Indian city for that matter. As long as they are not too nosy, I think, I can manage it. But from what I gathered from the internet, live-in's in Chennai are seemingly on the rise. Good to know that ...

laters,

Nick,
Did the cost of living went through the roof in the last few years?.

A couple few years ago, Chennai land prices shot up, doubled or trebled in not much more than a year. Rents stayed behind for a while, then followed on the upward trend. The recession helped to balance things a bit. Yes, life here is a lot more expensive than it was,

I'm sure that there are a lot of live-in couples that everyone assumes are married. The assumption, in much of Chennai is probably still necessary, and if you advertise that you are not married, you may attract unwanted attention, and stand a good chance of not getting a rental

Even in any city in India if you mention you are live in couple, you will surely get exclaimed looks, and it depends in which area of chennai you live.

Anyways just welcome to Chennai, we have a very big surprise for you and your fiancee.

Lol, she isn't my fiancee, just my girlfriend. And, I hope the surprise is a pleasant one . I keep coming to Chennai but my visits do not last for more than 2 days, a pretty short time to analyze the city. BTW, I think, Amethyst is the coolest coffee shop I've ever been to. Since, I love coffee pubs more than the normal ones, I know Chennai has got plenty to cater to my tastes. I'll be in Chennai this sunday for the Rahman concert at the township(Marg) where I bought my house. If you guys have planned for any meetups around that time, may I join in?

Thanx,

My wife is still nurturing a wish to go to that. I'm telling her that unless she spends a huge fortune on the ticket, he will be just a spec in the distance.

I've got 2 free donor passes worth 1K each from Marg. Not sure, if that's the highest valued pass there is. I wasn't planning to attend at all but an important business came up which needs me to be there, so I thought I might as well use the passes. If, I had met you here even a day earlier, maybe I would've couriered them to you for free .

Thanx,

Kind thought. Enjoy!

Not only am I as deaf as post this weekend due to an ear problem, it is not my sort of music anyway (I did like his early film music), but my wife likes it. Actually, I did see AR, in Birmingham, with a previous GF, a few years back.

Marg???? If you mean the Swarnabhoomi township/SEZ... thats almost as far out as pondicherry.... too far from chennai to consider yourself resident in chennai

Itd be a hell of a commute to get to chennai just for a coffee... though i must admit as well to having driven all the way to pondicherry at 1 in the morning only to have a cup of coffee and return at 6...

You act as married, and the neighbours will ask you questions like when you got married, and mind if you stay for about one year your neighbours will be worried and want your wife to be pregnant. ;-( It will lot of fun then for you.
